Volition73
Got more done today, took 3 engines to the machine shop, picked up some metal (think I got enough?) and dropped the 620's old eng/trans to a fellow datsun guy. Got the dash out today and got a hold of a local fabricator who will help some metal stuff I can't do (run some beads on my soon to be floor pans and I'm gonna cut my cab mounts out and have him make some replicas I can just weld in with my new pans...) 1 Quote Link to comment

Volition73
Back at it... Got the steering assembly out and managed to get all of the cab mounts out too. Tomorrow I'll start making a dolly to make it easier to move the cab around. I'll get to work on mocking up the frame for all of the suspension components and while I wait for parts (and funds lol) to get the suspension done I'll start in on the surgery...I'd appreciate any tips or similar repairs in the following pictures...Hope everyone is well as this covid situation continues... The windshield is the area I'm most worried about... Both hood hinges are shot... Glad I was able to get some new ones... Edited November 15, 2020 by Volition73 2 Quote Link to comment
Volition73
Finally! Huge step forward...We have lift off! 47 years of grime should come off easy right? Tomorrow I'll hit it with some degreaser and the pressure washer... 3 Quote Link to comment
EDM620
Consider hiring a service to come blast the frame for you, it was worth it for me. 2 Quote Link to comment
Volition73
EDM620 well heck that might be a good idea, there are a few places down the road from me, worth a shot...thanks! Quote Link to comment
EDM620
I still attacked it with a wire wheel on my angle grinder after (many wheels used up) as I checked it close for cracks etc. and I was planning to paint the frame. Only found 1 rust hole, in the front gas tank mount. It's so much nicer to work on a clean/bare frame than on a pile of rust. Everything just bolts up easier Quote Link to comment
Volition73
EDM620 Yeah I figured I would just hit it with the pressure washer and wire wheel where I need to weld the suspension bits up and then get it all blasted and seal it up with POR 15...I'll check it over as well as I can, the frame seems way better off than my cab dammit... EDM620
The good news is those old frames were really well made - fully boxed. The domestic stuff hadn't progressed that far and wouldn't for many years Quote Link to comment
Volition73
EDM620 I am thankful for that! I was considering reinforcing the setup I'm going to run but that is mostly for traction concerns... Quote Link to comment
Volition73
Pressure washer did...not much lol (did destroy a hidden rat nest though...) and she is almost bare... Next I'll make sure she's square and start to mock up the suspension 3 Quote Link to comment

Volition73
Long overdue, but I had to pack up and move across country and everything was in storage until now...I've got a small shop I'm able to work out of so I'm back to the truck...Big thing I am facing now is the position of the rear axle. The marks I made did not survive the move so now I need to rebuild the front end to get the wheel base measured out again. Does anyone here participate in autocross? That was the goal in mind with this truck and I'd like to ask a few questions on it. When is comes to custom builds and getting things are right as possible, how do you stay in the lines of making sure the suspension will work properly. I question my ability to make sure it's going to work at it's best based on geometry changes. Hope yall been well. Edited April 15 by Volition73 1 Quote Link to comment
Rustbin
First I seen of this thread, looks like a lot of work but doable. Welcome back to working on your Datsun. 1 Quote Link to comment

Heck ya, I used to do that alot in virtually everything I've owned. Won the championship in my class one year with a big old Crown Vic (fleet car no police pkg). Even got featured on local TV (thumps chest). Great fun! Power steering couldn't keep up. Quote Link to comment
EDM620
I have the factory frame dimensions you can use to cross-check everything. I'll see if I have the digital file handy Quote Link to comment
EDM620
I did find these ones. First is the regular cab short box 620, the second is for the 720. You can see there is precious little difference in frame dimensions. Should help get your suspension points sorted out.1974_Datsun_Pick-up Body & Frame Dimensions.pdf1980 720 Chassis & Frame Dimensions.pdf Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Just getting back into autocross myself after many years out. If my ka-t 620 will pass tech I'm considering taking it out for a fun event at the end of the season. It'll do poorly, but be amusing. 1 Quote Link to comment
