Look after your health yo

Recommended Posts

Im not posting this as a "poor RW, you musnt be well thread", nor do I expect any sympathy!

Bottom line is, I have not been looking after myself, and four days ago, I dodged not a bullet, but, a fucking Howitzer shell.

ive put on a lot of weight in the last couple of years, basically because ive become a lazy fuck. Being seven months shy of turning Fifty aint making it easier. Anyway, cut a long story short, four days ago I hit the doctors due to feeling "run down", and having a sinus infection.

Whilst there, Doctor decides to do blood pressure. 200/186 was the result. Accordingly, off to hospital I go.

Im a self confessed idiot, cause of a number of factors, most telling was I was a fucktard, and probably about a year ago, despite having moderately high blood pressure (and being on meds at the time) took myself off them and said to myself "man dont need this shit, im tough".

Anyway, in summary, Doctors are amazed I aint dead!!!, or havent succumb to a stroke.

I weigh 105kg at the moment, and am now committed to dropping at least 15kg over the next six months which will get me back to my sparring weight of rougly 90kg (just under 200lb)

If youve got this far, thanks for reading. This aint a "born again dieter thread", nor a "dont eat red meat or youll get cancer thread", basically one guys request to others out there, look after your health yo.

P.s. Medication has in four days got my bp back to roughly 136/90. Have been eating good over the last four days and actually enjoying stuff like grilled fish and vegies and some good Aussie salad material. Doctor even capitulated and agreed im never going to give up beer, and surprisingly, my desire to down beers has diminished, albeit slightly :)

200 is off the charts! That's like constantly jogging... maybe even more. Add more fish and chicken and loose the bakery stuff. I haven't eaten bread or buns in 1 1/2 years. That (carbs) shit goes right into fat storage.

Reasonably good health as you age is the best and most precious thing you will ever have. Better than money, better than owning things. Live long enough to collect your pension and get senior discounts, you've damn well earned it. Play with grand children or your friends children. Look back on your life and ahead.

Thanks for this. I need to straighten up also. Could loose 10 Kg as well.

200 is off the charts Mike, the doctor actually started stuttering and went into a bit of a panic.

It doesnt excuse or condone me letiing myself get lazy and fat, but, I actually felt ok (apart from the sinus issue).

Hopefully if even one person on Ratsun (apart from me) goes "shit I better get my blood pressure checked", my stupidity will have been worthwhile.

Fuck me running.  My competition bp is 180-190.  That's full on competition running.  When I run 7:30 second miles, I'm about 160 right now.  200 is NOT GOOD.  Glad you're alive, and yes, start eating right and exercise!  Your body will reward you with not falling apart! ;)

In reality man, health is extremely important. Since my dad had his stroke about 3 mos. ago, I've been more and more conscious of my own health and how important taking care of it is. My pops is doing better now, but still in bed and I'm most certainly sure he hates it, knowing him. But hey, if you play you pay.

I encourage you push yourself to the limits, RW, and slim down completely. 360¤ turn for your health, and for those who care about you. They feel your pain too and are affected by it. And, use that build thread previously mentioned to get you up and going, bro!

We'll pump you up! ;-)

Stupid thing for me is I have been bloody fit, and I should know better.

No excuses, im back on track now.

Eating really well, building up slowly with my exercise (walked approximately 18kms in the last two days).

BP this morning was 128/90, no wonder I feel so good. And, soooooo fucking motivated to build car!!

Bless you all.

Well that's a hell of a lot better, still a bit high.  For comparison, my semi-fit butt has a resting heart rate of about 70 right now. ;)  Keep up the walking, lay off the fat, chips, soda, crap.  More veggies, less meat!

Interestingly, when I tell people to start exercising, I usually tell them to not get their heart rate above 130-140 for their first efforts.  Puts a real strain on the heart and muscles right away.  First couple of weeks, usually keep the activity level around no higher than 140, which would usually be light jogging or hiking.  With your heart rate that high during normal operation, that means walking will probably help your body balance out as long as you keep an eye on what you intake.

I will say, one of the best things I've done is kick soda.  It's rare I have a soda anymore.  Maybe once a week or every two weeks.  After a year of that, you don't even get a craving for it anymore.  I'm completely not addicted to Mountain Dew, which is nice.  And holy crap is it dumping buckets here!  Rain got so loud I heard it over the typing.

Dude, that is awesome.  I actually have a tear in my eye after seeing that, its really motivating to see you make the effort for me !!

Sad thing is, Fifteen years ago I weighed 78kg (roughly 172 lb), ran 10km every day (6 and a bit miles) and would do half an hour cardio at the gym at least four days a week.  I was too skinny, but, frighteningly fit!

Apart from fat, I have put on muscle bulk so im going to be happy if I can get down to 90kg (200lb).  I know all the right things to do, just got fucking lazy and have only myself to blame.

Important thing is not to rush stuff.  I cant run anymore but can do low impact cardio and eat well which at the moment will be the two best things for me.

Thanks again, im really overwhelmed someone from the other side of the world would make the effort!

Lol, it's never too late to get it back.  Just gets harder as you get older.  My old man can still whoop my ass for fitness level.  I can run faster and farther than him, but his upper body is a lot better than mine.  Don't give up!  I'll be your right-side-up motivator from the states! :D (pms cleared)

Thank you, brother. I really appreciate your thoughts. I need to watch my health as well. I am hoping for a big turn around for myself, as the one you've already made! Good going!!!

Well, biiiiiigggggggig checkup at the Doctors this morning and im really pleased to say things are on the up and up (though this in no way means I can become complacent again).  Doctors really pleased with all my test results and what I am on track to do so far.

My blood pressure this morning was down to 126/83 although it went up to 140/90 as soon as I hit the doctors (goddamn white coat hypertension).

Had an ultrasound of my kidneys, liver etc earlier this week and only got the results today so have been a bit concerned for the last couple of days.  Thankfully everything is 100% normal.

Had my blood and urine tested for just about everything, and (again) thankfully all tests are showing me in being in the normal range for my age (although my cholesterol is on the higher side of normal)

Exercising approximately 40 minutes per day doing a brisk walk first thing in the morning.  I'm a long way off the fitness level I had 20 years ago but am already enjoying the exercise and although Matt (HRH) has thrown out the pull up challenge, im a long way off, but, I WILL !!! get there (damm you Matt  ).

Compared to Ten days ago I feel fucking great and extremely grateful my body has given me a second chance.  On a slightly somber note my Doctor did remind me how close I came to suffering a massive stroke/heart attack  .

Getting in a really good routine with the quality of food and quantity so overall, going good and hope to keep doing so.

Remember you guys, please don't let yourselves get into the shit state I allowed myself to get to.

Take care and all the best.

RW

p.s. Have a day off so Im off to throw some spanners at the Datsun.
