Lazy620
I know their was another thread about this but couldn't find it my steering wheel as a lot of play Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Steering box, tie rod ends, idler arm bushing, king pin bushings. If the play goes away near right or left full lock, then it's likely the steering box is worn in the middle and needs to be rebuilt or swapped for a better box... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 521 has about a 19 to one steering ratio. This means that if ALL the steering components have a total accumulated wear of only 1/4", the steering wheel will move side to side almost 5"!!! Things that add slop to your steering are: Poorly adjusted wheel bearings Worn king pins Worn tie rod ball joints, there are 4 of them Worn cross rod ball joints, there are two of them Worn out idler arm bushings Worn or badly adjusted steering box Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Steering tie rods and cross rods, Idler arm bushings? NAPA, Rock Auto, O'rilies? E-Bay.... Nissan? On the top of the box will be an adjustment bolt with a lock nut. Raise the wheels off the ground, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjustment out (I think) to decrease the gear lash. Turn the wheel lock to lock. Under no circumstance must there be any tight spots or binding. Steering boxes tend to wear in the most common use position... straight ahead or in the middle. If you tighten the middle up the full left and right positions where there is little wear will be tight. Avoid this! Adjust but not so much that there is any tight spots. Lock down the adjustment when done and test one last time. GL-4 transmission oil is fine in the steering box. 1 Quote Link to comment
