Lockleaf
Good call on the speedo needle. I will have to dig through my wife's nail polish see if she has any obnoxious orange. Now that you have me thinking about making the needle match better, maybe I can make a circle cover for the center and paint it silver to fully match... Maybe not though I don't know if I will bother. 2 Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
That would be a good idea, have it go around the outside of the tach since that would be about the same size as the one on the speedo.... idk, might make it look off or too busy in that one bay. Maybe have someone photochop it in and see how it looks first? 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Yeah, I'll figure that out eventually. I finally pulled out all the crap that was stuffed in the car and went through it. I found most of my missing switches. Lots of other crap too, but not everything I was hoping to find. I still have no ash tray, but I have a couple of extra L? Engine harmonic balancers and pulley sets, an ignition coil, a random engine bracket, and like 9 not Datsun seatbelts? So I guess that's cool..... 1 Quote Link to comment

Lockleaf
I also have the center pad/button for it. If I decide to sell it, you get first dibs. What I really want for my wagon is a 720 St wheel. I think it's a B210 wheel. 1 Quote Link to comment

dukerollo
Great progress so far. I am about to grapple with the wiring monster in my 210, so i appreciate any wiring hints and tricks that are posted up. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Thanks Duke. I do almost all of my soldering with a torch instead of an iron. It's been a long haul learning to do it without lighting the wire on fire, but I got so tired of pissing around with irons that it has been worth it. I am a huge believer in soldering flux too. The nice thing about flux is when torch soldering, the flux kinda sparkles and burns off and when that stops, you're metal is hot enough and ready to take the solder. Makes everything really easy. Like I said before, I don't know that my technique is the best, but it keeps me happy and my wiring projects from years past still seem to be working, so I'm happy with it for now. I've only managed to rewire one more switch. For whatever reason, my '71 Goon only has a '69 Flasher switch in it, which I found piled in all the crap in the back of the car. Since I don't have the '71 column shroud anyway, I'm just using that switch. I think it is supposed to mount under the steering column on the right side, or at least there is a plate down there that seems to want to be for that purpose. I'm not sure if I'm going to do that or if I might move it over to the blank hole opposite the cigarette lighter on the center of the dash. Also, planning on running a 720 center console and using the volt and oil gauges out of the 720. But that blocks the lower blower vents, so I'm looking in to options for that... PICS Tomorrow of the console and the filler piece I'm considering, and also my thoughts on my flasher options. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Forgot interior pics. Thought of something else though. For anyone looking for a larger radiator, 720 radiator fits perfectly between the headlights, but it's too tall. So if you are looking to recore a radiator might be a great option to have shortened. Set back from the radiator support about 1/2 inch, this radiator actually comes very close to fitting. The only impediment is the hood reinforcement on the passenger side. Notch that and this radiator could be run as is. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Finally dug out the plastic gauge bezel cover from the 720. Held it up and it's a perfect fit. Now I just need to figure out a way to secure it in place and then cut out the appropriate shape. Pardon the dirt, it sat outside for a while. 3 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Pounded out a bunch of wiring over the last couple of days. Headlight switch, turn signals, flasher switch, and main body harness all got repinned or rewired. Wipers are going to be more difficult. I think I will have to find an intermittent switch from a 78+ 620 or other Datsun with a dash mount intermittent. The connector to the rear of the car gave me some trouble. Some of the wire colors did not match any of the wiring diagrams I have. Two of the bastards were even the exact same color. So I busted out the 12v power source. Clipped the ground to a bolt I threaded in to the body and hit the first light green with some power. BAM! Light identified. Three wires were question marks, but those got figured out pretty quick and I had the body connector all done as well. Also got back to work on the gauge bezel. Got the cover plate cut out and holes drilled. I'm working out exactly how to mount the screw points... 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I got something worked out to mount the cover on the bezel. Should hold up OK, even if it's not super pretty. It's all hidden anyway. The pics don't really do it justice. It looks much nicer, just more finished appearing. 3 Quote Link to comment

Lockleaf
Thanks Charlie that's good to know. I have a 71 Honda CL350 as well, and it looks like those guys offer those connectors too. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Engine was laying in the gravel behind the wagon, so I had to load it in the truck to get it out. Put the wagon on the driveway to dump the engine in to it. Storage reasons, it's a 720 z22 2wd setup with full rear sump, so it didn't actually go in to place. Needs oil pan work. This is how my car came to me... Not sure what they were going for I did this to it, I have a long tail trans. Fits like OJs glove... So not very well at all Trans will move back about another inch once I get the pan modified to clear. 3 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Bought some old 13x5 steelies for the wagon. Been wanting some kind of deep lip steelie for a while and figured these were cheap enough I could destroy them and it wouldn't matter. I used the brake lathe at work to cut the welds holding the faces in. With face out I plan to flip it in the barrel. There isn't a lot of room for adjustment on a rim this narrow. I can move the face maybe 3/8 of an inch positive or negative offset from this position and still have good structural stability. Like this it's a 13x5 et-6, which pokes just the tiniest bit more than the 6 spoke Z rims my car currently has. Black lip is the flipped barrel (modified) version. Only two are cut. I haven't actually test fitted them yet either. Been too cold. Test fit will help me determine final offset. 8 Quote Link to comment

Lockleaf
Cut the other two rims apart today. Decided to play a little more in the dark. Sorry the pics suck, I will take more later. 2 Quote Link to comment
mattyhacks71
Awesome idea, I've wanted to do some widened steelies but they wont clear my calipers :( 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
What calipers are you running? If you are already planning the effort of custom built rims, could you design the offset so it's proper only when mounted with a spacer to clear the calipers? Or maybe even weld a spacer to the rim and set it up to use mag style lug nuts? 1 Quote Link to comment

I don't want to put in an order till I know they will clear the calipers. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Don't some of those companies allow you to purchase or "rent" a face to see if it clears? Regardless, playing with these rims has possibly started a small addiction. After I finish these, I'm going to buy another set and see about actually widening them. I want to build some 13x7ish deep dish steelies. If that works out, I have another different idea I want to try on a third set. I'm likely getting ahead of myself though. The GM transit 9x22 use a 16" standard face in large double stepped barrel to get to 22". (Thanks jrock for setting me straight on those). I would love to use those barrels and some 16" 5 lug steelies and build some custom "for the hell of it rims" for my s13 hatchback. This will never happen, but it would be amusing to try. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I haven't done much on my projects lately. December was crazy with law school finals and family for the holidays. I share my welder with two of my brothers, so it hasn't been at my house for a while. So I haven't finished the rims yet. But I did something today! My 510 has no front seat cross bar thingies, so I got some. I have a parts 720 that i pulled the seat cross bars from. I used harbor freight spot weld cutter to do it. Worked extremely well, i was impressed. There were at least 10 welds per bar and One cutter did them all, and was still going strong on the last weld. Testing passenger fit Testing drivers fit A little bending on the lips took care of most of the fitment, but right next to the trans tunnel there is a kick up where the seat crossmember is flat, so I had to cut that section out. I will weld it back in place as you see it in this pic. Little more modification and they should work great. 3 Quote Link to comment
