IsaacHeink
Hey all, my name is Isaac. I'm new to both Datsuns and this forum. I purchased a 1981 Datsun 510 Wagon on the sixth of June, and have had nothing but trouble with the car since. Haha. Unfortunately, I have some strange and unfounded love for everything about this vehicle, so I am not prepared to stop fighting for her life. I just had her radiator replaced, but whad'ya know, she needs a new heater hose too. Does anyone know where I purchase a Nissan/Datsun replacement? Or even a non-Nissan made hose that will fit on my car? In my searching for replacement, I read that there is an S-shaped hose and a straight hose. I'm not sure which one of these my busted hose is. I can tell you that it runs from the lower radiator hose and that is fairly short. I would greatly appreciate any help that can be offered from you kind folks. Quote Link to comment

IsaacHeink
Thanks, BigTanker! Unfortunately, the hoses on the site were for the 1969-1973 automatic 510s. Mine is a 1981 510 with a manual transmission. 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Have you called you dealer? I ordered some for a 69 510 and they had them.. If we are talking about the hoses in the engine bay. 1 Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
Thanks for the advice, Draker. I gave my hometown dealer a call and they didn't answer, so I called a larger city's dealer and they told me they could not get the part. Rats! Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
You have an A10 Datsun often referred to as the HLA10 or 'later' 510. The lower hose is the return line. Can you not just buy hose by the foot and just replace it??? Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
R0pdoe: I have tried RockAuto.. Nothing. DatzenMike: Thanks a lot for the info! I wondered what people were talking about when they mentioned "A10." I didn't think of that! I guess I could use a cut piece of hose, but I don't know exactly what size to get, or how to figure out the size. Any suggestions on how to do one of those two things? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Tape measure the length and add some to be generous. Measure the inner diameter of the old one or the pipe it goes onto for size. Quote Link to comment
Draker
These? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heater-hose-68-73-Datsun-510-all-models-/180591351968?hash=item2a0c1558a0&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heater-hose-short-68-73-Datsun-510-all-models-/180591352027?hash=item2a0c1558db&vxp=mtr Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
DatzenMike: I'm going to give this a try as soon as I have my car towed home. I have to get the torn hose off anyway, I might as well measure it out and see what I can find. Thanks! Draker: Those look super promising, and they're not as expensive as I was expecting them to be! Do you think they would fit even though they're 1968-1973? Quote Link to comment
Draker
Not sure, if it's an L20 I would assume they would be what your looking for. Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
Getting them is worth a shot if I can't find the right size hose to cut to size. But it's actually a Z20S. Quote Link to comment
docbainey
There are several sites on line that specialise in selling Nissan parts, but you need the part number. There is a multitude of parts availavble from Nissan for older models, but you need the part number. The dealers, unless they are willing to go the extra mile, just blow you off. That said, if you give them the part number, all of a sudden, yea, I can get that. I can still by OE parts for my 610, like E brake cables and hardware, brake lines, trans parts (but no syncros) even a cylnder head. The hardest part is getting the part numbers. Ive found a lot of part numbers looking at cars NOT sold in north america but sold world wide as a different models. Hell, you can still buy a twin SU manifold for an L series engine from Nissan, but you need the part number. I feel your pain. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I can get the part number likely but not until after the weekend. Send me a p/m to remind me. Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
To whom it may concern: I tried to do as DatzenMike suggested and replace the hose myself with a free-form, free-cut hose I bought at an auto-parts store. I got the old hose off fairly easily, and discovered that it was more damaged than I had imagined (picture 1). I spent the last two days looking for a hose that may fit the hose connector in the car, and I found three potential options. I felt (and still feel) that at least one of these options would do the job. Anyways, I decided to take my candidates to the car and see if they fit, but to my dismay, I found out that the problem was much worse than I originally thought. I found that one of the parts where the hose connects was rusted. Honestly, I have very little experience with rust, and cars in general, so I have no idea how severe the rusting is. Picture 2 is a photo of the rusted connector. I have also attached a picture of the other end where the hose connects (picture 3), which has little/no rust. I am getting the car towed to a shop tomorrow, however, I have never had the car repaired in my hometown before, so I don't know a mechanic/shop that could help me with this particular issue. I will be doing research tonight to try to find the best shop to take the car. But I am posting this here in hopes that someone will be a able to tell me the severity of the rust, and perhaps suggest a idea of dealing with it? Does anybody have any experience with rusting like this? datzenmike
This part is replaceable. They can be unscrewed from any old Z series block or is that the one on the under side of the intake? . Place an ad here... http://community.ratsun.net/classifieds/category/4-engine/?sort_key=date_added&sort_order=desc and have one sent to you. . Just needs cleaning or get another. If replacing hoses always slit them lengthwise to remove. This prevents stressing the fittings like those on a heater core or rad. Also get rid of that fram filter. Worst quality filter ever made. IsaacHeink
Thank you for the help, DatzenMike! What a relief! I'm not exactly sure if it's under the intact, but here is a wider shot of the fitting. I believe the threads are actually visible in this picture! http://i.imgur.com/XSyIc6m.jpg Yes sir, will do. We ended having to cut the hose off of the fitting eventually, but no before we tried to push it off with a flathead screwdriver. I will place an ad right away! But I found a 1980 Datsun 510 in a scrap yard not far from where I live, do you think it would be a bad idea to use the part from that car? Thanks for the tip, I'll change that as soon as I can. IsaacHeink
Does that part have a name? I don't know what to ask for in the classified ad. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I think it returns water from the intake to the bottom rad hose inlet. Is it just an elbow? or is there a hose also coming from the heater core behind it? Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
There is another hose connected on the same part. Here is a picture from directly underneath: http://i.imgur.com/6tj23t6.jpg Also, there is a smaller piece connected to it. Here's a photo of that: http://i.imgur.com/cWnP3Ny.jpg Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yup, That is, I think, the heater hose return. it joins with the water coming out of the intake and they all of it goes to the lower rad hose inlet to the water pump. #14075-W8801 is the part number. It's also used on the '81-'82 720 Z22 engine. Nissan calls it a three way connector. Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
I found the part new online and placed my order this morning! Thanks so much for your help, DatzenMike. I'll keep everyone updated! 1 Quote Link to comment
IsaacHeink
Well, I ordered the part only to receive an email telling me the part was actually unavailable. This happened again with a different website, and I finally got smart and emailed the websites for availability before ordering. Needless to say, the part was unavailable on all of the websites, so it's back to square one. I posted an ad in the classifieds a few days ago, but I have not gotten any hits yet. I couldn't sit around all week and wait, so I desperately turned to junkyards. I found a Datsun HL510 at a yard 2.5 hours away from where I live, so I excitedly packed up and headed that way. Long story short: they had the Datty, but it was picked through and the three way connector was gone. Bummer. I checked all of the junkyard websites within 4 hours of me and I no one has a Datsun (HL)510 or '81-'82 720. I figure all I can do now is wait to get a hit on my advert and keep checking the yards. Anyway, I just wanted to give you folks an update. Have a good'n. Quote Link to comment
fritzdixxon
There is a yard close to me with a bunch of 720s I can go out and have a look for you. Can you post a pic from a little farther back showing where it is on the motor, also take one far enough back so we can see the whole car. Quote Link to comment
