datsunfreak Posted July 15, 2018 Report Share Posted July 15, 2018 So for the cooling issue, Tim has decided the plan is to install an engine driven fan. We got one of the "race car" fans that moves a ton of air. This required the use of a 2" spacer on the fan, as well as moving the radiator back 1" Which meant cutting an inch off the top blockoff panel he made as well... You can also see in that photo the nifty prop rod he made for the doghouse lid... We are currently pulling the transmission to replace the clutch. After that gets sorted, we will give it a drive to see how the fan does. We are expecting to need a shroud as well, but hoping we will get lucky and not need it... 2 Quote Link to comment

The BMW I had used 2 electric fans up front and one thermcluched can on the engine. Kept it nice and cool. They usualy overheat when the one on the engine fails. Transmission is now out, and it was really quite easy. Took the flywheel to the machine shop to get it refinished. Should be picking it up today. Unfortunately, the clutch Amazon sent us was a 10" clutch, and we need an 8.5" clutch. ? After doing some detective work, some online sources seem to believe the 10" clutch is what the '62 Econoline van used originally. There is no way that big a clutch/flywheel would fit into this tiny transmission. Apparently the '64-67 Mustang with a 200ci engine (what our engine is) used the 8.5" clutch so we ordered one of those and it should be here Monday/Tuesday. datsunfreak Posted August 9, 2018 Report Share Posted August 9, 2018 Flywheel back and looking sharp, and the 8.5" Mustang clutch fits well... That and the transmission should go back in Saturday... Tim has been reading up on making more power with this engine and the consensus seems to be getting colder air into the engine, not having it suck air from the "hot box", is the path to more power. Tim got an air box from a 280Z and made a bracket for it to bolt to the bottom of the van... Got that installed and started looking at how to connect that to the carb. Tim got a hat and some piping and... While he was doing all that, I disassembled and cleaned the driveshaft. Then installed new u-joints and painted it... This driveshaft has the smallest tube I have ever seen. And wee tiny u-joints as well... 3 Quote Link to comment

datsunfreak Posted September 6, 2018 Report Share Posted September 6, 2018 Built a bracket to hold the oil filter housing and we added another bit to it on the side... And mounted in the van... The other bit is an inline drain for the other hose. This way we can drain the filter and the oil cooler when we change the oil... 4 Quote Link to comment

He didn't want the spare tire inside, and we didn't have room under the van, so he made a neat extension to the trailer hitch receiver that holds up the spare... It has a pivot on the bottom, so you just pull a pin and... And the tire is just low enough to open the door... I like it... ? 5 Quote Link to comment

If you look at the pic with it in the up position, the steel bar it rests on has three corresponding holes in it. Two will be used if it needs to be firmly attached. datsunfreak Posted December 23, 2018 Report Share Posted December 23, 2018 Tim has been driving it a bit, racking up some miles, looking for things that need addressing, and we found a few... ? The small VW mirrors were just not getting it done, so we swapped to these... That made a big difference in visibility. ? As you can see in that pic, we also completely disassembled the front door guts. They were rattling sooooooooooo bad. We are now in the process of painting the interior side of the doors. Once that is finished it will go back together will all new rubber bits for a (hopefully) rattle-free drive. 4 Quote Link to comment
