JakeWard
Picked this up with Andrew (ATP) a little while ago. He made it safe to drive and now I've been cruising it around. Story behind it goes something like: Original owner had it, then died, then daughter drove it for a bit, then it sat for 10+ years. 2nd owner bought it as a little runaround truck, but it was too light-duty for what he needed (Drills Wells for a living) it for so it sat for another 5 years. Then we picked her up. Stacked them Cleaned her up a little bit And now she buzzes right along. Plan is to daily drive it whilst the Z gets a little MS3 action. 6 Quote Link to comment

JakeWard
Heck the AM radio and mono speaker still works. Need an antenna though. Is the general consensus here to swap to a 32/36? Going to give it a little more research. Also, wanting to lower it via re-indexing a bit and blocks. Not trying to get slammed just little less.... cute. HA 2 Quote Link to comment

flatcat19
From what I read, it's 50/50 between a stock carb and the Weber. It really boils down to what you want out of the truck. EI dizzy is a must though. Whether the matchbox or Petronix. Just do it. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I have a AM radio and no body want to get in my truck and steal it. Nice truck!!!!!!!!! repaint rims whit or stock grey get a electronic ignition Pertronix is for single point dizzys a a Matchbox but get the base and coil with it. up date to weber when carb goes bad and buy spare Brake and Cluck master and slave cylinders so you have thm ready on hand Rock auto has them. Most are no made in Taiwan or who knows where best is Japan if avail. I just replce my Brake master again. I have gone thro 3 on like 6years. Just junk. Nissan don't carry anymore for 521. So buy 2 1 Quote Link to comment
JakeWard
:( I was a dummy and left my lights on. Killed the battery, jumped it, took it for a good little cruise, got home and apparently the alternator was nearing death as well. So now before any fun anti-cuteness happens, gotta get an alternator. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Look up the IR mod for your next alternator. 1 Quote Link to comment
JakeWard
So definitely considering the IR route. Using the googly machine I've found lots of info (seems mostly 510 oriented) and some folks with trucks have issue with fitting certain alternators. I'm trying to figure out what I need to pick up parts-wise so I don't make 9 trips to the junkyard and end up with 8 paperweights. I THINK the Saturn alt will be most plentiful. Can someone spoon feed an example of what you did on your own L16 in a 521? Part of me wants to say screw it and just get a stock replacement reman'd. I mean it was fine for the last 40 years... 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
On my 66 520 I went Saturn at first but it was to tight for my liking. I ended up going with one from a 1980 720 L20B. This was easy for me because I am also using the 1980 720 wiring harness in my 66 520. Quote Link to comment
gene knight
nice 521. I see that you collect them like me. 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
There is nothing wrong with a stock alternator and external regulator setup. Most people go to an internal regulated alternator because that is what is available at junkyards. I got a USA rebuilt one at a non chain auto parts store, and it is working good in my 521. This is my 521 "Ratsun" thread. http://community.ratsun.net/topic/30606-my-ratsun-datsun-521/ DO not go with a GM alternator. Most GM alternator swaps I have seen are hack jobs, using stacks of washers to get the belt pulley location correct. Nissan makes very good electronic parts. This is the alternator off a Nissan pathfinder. This is a cast lower alternator mount. It has a lower mounting point. and you can fit a larger diameter alternator. The Pathfinder alternator has the correct width between the lower ears to fit the bracket, and it also put the pulley in the right location to match the crankshaft and waterpump pulley. 2 Quote Link to comment

thisismatt
I used an Eagle Talon alt on my L16 521. It fit well with just a slightly longer belt after swapping the pulley. That said, a stock Nissan alt will probably fit better and way easier to find. Read this: http://community.ratsun.net/topic/69-90-amp-bolt-in-alternator-on-an-l-series-motor/ 1 Quote Link to comment

JakeWard
Went bumblin' down some dirt roads, and it started to get a little hot. Greatttt. Undecided on what to replace just yet, but probably the radiator if a flush doesn't work. Picked up a bunch of 510 stuff that will be for sale 3 Quote Link to comment
