DMC
So I got some holes welded up today, still learning how to adjust the speed and heat.. What gauge steel is it..18 gauge? Having a blast though got some holes to still patch and get the battery tray cut out part fixed and smoothed out..I will post some pictures tomorrow. .021 maybe,,,,, 2 Quote Link to comment

Duncan
Ray, Get yourself some cheapie Harbor Freight digital calipers. They are great at $10.00 or so.. Sheet metal gauge chart. I can never remember the sizes myself. https://www.engineersedge.com/gauge.htm 1 Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
^^^^ You like my pink pole???? I had a friend of mine build it. He asked me last Friday what color I wanted it painted, I said how about pink or purple and throw a little blue just for the hell of it. Well I got what I asked for. I guess he didn't realize I was joking when I said that. I kinda just wanted blue, But I'm going to leave it as is. you have to learn to tell people what you really want LOL    I like the pink pole it is safety first so you wont run into it 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunrides
The sheetmetal is around 22ga, pretty thin. That fancy welder should have a auto set feature. Set your wire size and metal thickness and it does the rest. I use .030 ER70 wire with Ar/CO2 gas. Cleaner weld than flux core. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Yea will get a bottle as soon as I can just get off to late but will do hopefully Friday. Got to save money. Mark you should be here helping man. Lol Quote Link to comment
shacks510
Ray, Get yourself some cheapie Harbor Freight digital calipers. They are great at $10.00 or so.. Go for the high roller status and get the stainless version for $20. Even less if you're a cheap bastard and use a coupon. They're actually really nice. I have one and like it a lot. I wouldn't waste the time on the plastic one. 1 Quote Link to comment
INDY510
I like .023 wire for Datsun metal ... the thinner wire seems better for thin metal, but I'm no welding expert .. 2 Quote Link to comment

datsunrides
Mark you should be here helping man. Lol Sorry ray, been busy getting this ready for JCCS this year. Got to save money................................HA! I like .023 wire for Datsun metal ... the thinner wire seems better for thin metal, but I'm no welding expert .. .023 will work nice on tight tolerances, but I have found my patches are usually not perfect. The .030 to me works better to fill the space. I too am no expert and I will use whatever happens to be in the welder. Mark 4 Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
I hate Harbor Freight calipers, 2 different pairs and neither can take accurate measurements. Ended up buying the iGaging Absolutes from Amazon, and like them better than the Mitutoyos at work. I run .023 wire for the most part, Only time I have switched was for some thick flux core when welding on a frame outside. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
All good to know guys thanks. Now if I can just get you guys down here and pay you guys to do it.lol 1 Quote Link to comment
Duncan
Unless Ray is going to start machining parts per print, the HF calipers are fine for measuring metal thickness for patch panels, checking drill bit sizes, and general garage use. Of course knowing Ray, he'd probably go buy a surface plate and height gauges, pin gauges, etc, etc just to build model airplanes :) I also like .023 for sheet metal. My friend uses .030 and it seems like it takes more time to grind the weld down. I hate Harbor Freight calipers, 2 different pairs and neither can take accurate measurements. Measuring an inch could be .455" or 8.6" on a 6" caliper... Its like what happens when calipers get wet... but they were dry... The amazon ones I got where like $35. 1 Quote Link to comment

Duncan
Strange. I've had two sets of $10 calipers, and we have 3-4 sets of them at the shop in San Diego. No problems with any of them. datrod
Actually Mr Big has a Snap on 6" digital caliper. He just doesn't know what they are called. But it's more than likely the same shit harbor freight sells with a snap on sticker on it. 1 Quote Link to comment
