UnderControl
Not a huge amount of progress, but something is better than nothing. Pedals are out along with choke and steering shaft (now dubbed Vlad the impaler) cover. Got the master cylinder and a few miscellaneous items pulled from the engine bay. Otherwise just some more pondering. Considering it is supposed to be colder than death the next several days that is probably all until the weekend at least. UnderControl
Continuing the saga of taking things apart so I can start putting it back together, Vlad is gone along with everything else from under the dash. This brings me to a point of contention with how these were built. Both the dash and the cowl are welded in, in fact, they are welded together to make the lower lip of the windshield frame. In other words it is a pain in the ass to get in there to repair these fresh air towers and clean up all of the surface rust on the underside of the dash. Also went ahead and pulled the front brake lines and distro block out. I have a lot of holes to fill in. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Pan dropped right into place and everything lined up remarkably well. Moment of truth. The pan around the frame rail is so pitted that it is hard to tell where the spot welds are so I'll likely end up grinding it down to remove it. Once the remainder is out I'll drop the pan back in to recheck my line. In the process of cleaning everything out I came across what appears to be an old polling worker's button. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Remainder of the old floor is off the frame rails, pan dropped back in and line verified. Then started test fitting the vert inner rocker. I've got to cut about 13" off the back and do some tweaks to tie it into the rear torque box. Now the real question is if I want to do subframe connectors through the floor or under. Edited February 7, 2019 by UnderControl 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
When you need to clean out the frame rails but don't have a brush that can reach. Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Getting closer to being able to weld things in. Inner rocker is cut down and 3/4 of the holes drilled for plug welding. And got the outer flange cut off of the floor pan and set it back in to mark the location of the frame rail. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Got the rest of the spot weld holes drilled in the inner rocker, and then got busy drilling holes in the pan. Followed that up with a lot of grinding and got to work cleaning 50 years of dirt and grime out of the trans tunnel. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Spent another night getting cozy with the grinder with wire wheels and paint and rust remover pads. I'm most of the way through cleaning up the underside. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
In for the final test feel before pulling the bits back out for paint and weld thru primer. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
After dropping the new seat riser in to verify the fit I pulled everything back out, gave it a good cleaning and got to painting. Put actual paint on the insides of things that are about to be unreachable and weld thru primer on the weld surfaces and heat affected areas. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
The first of what will likely be a few nights of welding is in the bag. Not super stoked on the weld thru primer I'm using this time around. Having a bitch of a time getting a consistent arc. So I've started brushing it off as I go around and being sad I bought 2 cans. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Got some stitching to finish, but otherwise it's in. 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
What primer is it that sucks? Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
I'm using Seymour PBE. After playing around with the ground a bit it did get better, but by then I had brushed back most of the edges. Otherwise no new pictures, but the floor pan and inner rocker are all stitched in. I've got a couple of pin holes to go back and fill in and then I can move on to the passenger side. Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
OK, I'm going to rescind my previous about the weld thru primer. I had a couple small flanges to weld in tonight and I prepped them in the same manor as before. Using the now known good ground spot and they welded in just fine. At worst this primer makes it more susceptible to poor grounding, but as long as you remember welding 101 and maintain a solid ground it is fine. In other news I got the rough cut done on the passenger side. 1 Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Good to know on the grounding. Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Took a week off because cold and RE2 remake, but back at it. Got everything pretty well cleaned back to bare metal. Tomorrow I should be able to get the inner rocker cut down and get the final cut done on the old floor pan. Hoping to start getting it welded in by the weekend. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Still have a little trimming to do to get the final fit done, but one step closer. Edited March 13, 2019 by UnderControl 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Nearly there. I must say this pan doesn't fit quite as well as the driver's side did, nothing a bit of persuasion can't fix just got complacent with the ease of the other. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Finally where I wanted to be last week. This is how far I got before running out of both wire and gas. Should be able to wrap it up early next week. Edited March 22, 2019 by UnderControl 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
About 95% of the way through burning in the passenger floor pan. Just a bit of stitching left to do on the underside and a small flange to make for that Conner in the top right of the pic. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Man I wish I could get 620 pans like that. Nice work 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
You and me both. I also wish the old Japanese tin welded like this old American iron. 1 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
And with this I'm calling floor pans done. Next week I'll start on torque boxes and then I'll have to decide if I'm going to work my way forward or back. 2 Quote Link to comment
UnderControl
Well after one week of laziness induced minimal progress, and another week of sinus infection induced zero progress I actually managed to get something done. the first torque box is in. There was a fair bit more work to get the two pieces to fit properly compared to the floor pans. Still need to box in the inner rocker. Then today I came to the conclusion I may have a problem when this followed me home from lunch. 2 Quote Link to comment
