Andres131313
Hey I've been running this idea in my head for a while now. Smog pumps pump are into the intake and exhaust manifolds. I know on my smog pump pulley is about the same size as the crank pulley. If I were to make a pulley 1/8th the size of the stock smog pulley it would act as a kind of makeshift supercharger right? Not as powerful but still more air into the engine? I've tried looking it up but I've only seen it done with bikes. Just am idea. Link to comment
datsunaholic
It doesn't pump anything into the intake. Just exhaust. So all you'd do is introduce more backpressure. What's going to the intake is the EGR, which is totally separate. The air pump hoses going to the air cleaner are part of the anti-backfire system. It doesn't pressurize the air cleaner. Even if you were to plumb it into the intake (and it'd have to be BEFORE the carb), it's not big enough to overcome vacuum, and would likely use more power than it creates. 1 Link to comment
DanielC
Another problem. Lets say, the stock smog pump turns the same RPM as the engine. If you make the pulley smaller on the smog pump, it will turn faster. A pulley 1/8 the size of stock, will turn the pump 8 times faster. At 5,000 engine RPM, the smog pump will be turning 40,000 RPM. But I believe the smog pump will have destroyed itself long before it hits 40,000 RPM. 3 Link to comment
Andres131313
I figured it wouldn't survive for long but I don't mean just changing the pulley and being done I mean a lot of heavy modifications to bearings and balanceing of the blades. I'm not saying I want to do it I'm just wondering if it would work. Let's say 1/2 the size of the pulley. That would make it 10,000 rpm. If you could get some oil bearing that would alow it to run at a higher rpm for longer. Link to comment
Farmer Joe
not gonna work... at all... just buy a real supercharger.. Link to comment
Fat510
not flamming you, but have you seen the inside of one? Link to comment
Jesse C.
Sshhhh! Let him do it! And take video of the results! 1 Link to comment
shacks510
Smog pumps are only good for making a loud thud as you toss them in the trash. 11 Link to comment
Mattndew76
Small Superchargers are cheap and easy to find. "cheap" being a broadly defined word. These can be of similar size to a smog pump or AC pump. Crazy ideas always cost 10X more in $$ than just buying the real thing. 1 Link to comment
datrod
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, "NO" It will never work. Link to comment
DaBlist
Is a smog pump a centrifugal pump like a turbocharger? Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Well I dont know about these guys but I have done it and i netted at least 38 RWHP and still run to this day.The hardest thing was machining a air cleaner cover for the smog outlet to pump in to. Link to comment
Andres131313
I have already seen superchargers that would fit. I'm not looking for 100 hp gain. Im just looking for 10 at least. Link to comment
TENDRIL
I still say you change your signature .... And buy a Honda 1 Link to comment
Ranman72
bad idea and if you still decide to do it when the smog pump pulley goes through the hood there will be many people saying I told you not to do it Link to comment
datzenmike
Crazy idea... correct!!! 1 Link to comment

Mattndew76
A SC won't add a 100HP if the ratio is set right on the pully. You already said speed up the smog pump to generate enough PSI for a few HP..... So why not slow down or bleed off a SC? Still a smarter idea to get a part that is meant to create boost instead of modding a smog pump that isn't meant for that. 1 Link to comment
Z-train
There has to be a Vortech sitting on someone's shelf that would work. Link to comment
Chuck Most
Cold air intake- Run some lines from the a/c ducts to the intake tract. Set the a/c to high...ENDLESS COLD AIR. :w00t: 3 Link to comment
JoeCool
Cold air intake... that reminds me of this: Skip to 8:00. Then after you see their twin superchargers mod, go watch it all the way through. 1 Link to comment
