Near Future Datson 620 Owner

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I just joined the forum today and I'm planning to own a 1978 620 King Cab.

My first step is to put a KA24DE into it, but before I get knees deep into it, I wanted to get my parts all together.

I know I need motor mounts and harness; can anyone point me where to get them at?

Next question is, what transmission would you guys recommend? I see people did 720s, 240s, but what's better/easier?

I've been reading a few of the threads that did this swap and I see that it took some cutting and grinding on the driveshaft and torsion bar (i think); can someone further explain that part?

Thank you everyone, hoping that the deal for this 620 goes through smoothly :D

Steve... ]2eDeYe on here makes and sells them....  http://community.ratsun.net/topic/39780-620-ka24-motor-mount-brackets/

The S13/14 KA24DE is heavier than the D-21 Hardbody truck DE engine. The car DE also has a crank girdle making  the fitting of a truck oil pan impossible. The Hardbody engine is an easier fit and lighter. Research this point.

Car EFI has it's own harness that is easier to separate and remove while the truck EFI wiring is part of the the main harness into the cab. The truck uses a vertical throttle body (looks like a 4bbl.) The car a horizontal throttle biody and plenum. Ideally the car EFI intake and sensors as well as the harness is the better way to go and it will fit the truck engine.

Yes you can use an FS5W71B 720 transmission from a Z series engine, usually they are 31.5" but there are some shorty 26". The 31.5" will fit your '78 without having to shorten your driveshaft. It's a fine sturdy transmission just not as strong as the one below...

You can also use a car or a truck FS5W71C transmission. The truck ones are the shortest and lightest. These are the strongest transmission but you will have to modify your driveshaft length. Car transmissions use an electric speed sensor, most early trucks use a regular speedometer cable. This can be fixed.

There is no cutting or grinding on the driveshaft needed. If length needs to be changed a shop is the place to take it. They will do the work and balance it as well.

There is no need to cut or grind on the torsion bar either. This engine swap does not affect them at all.

Car or truck KA24E or KA24DE is up to you. Just get one with the transmission and you pretty much have everything needed. Don't forget you need a high pressure fuel pump and Icehouse sells and easy to plug in Can-Am box for the wiring and relays... http://community.ratsun.net/topic/28097-canam-production-easy-wiring-boxes-for-efi-works-for-kas-srs-vgs-cas-and-more/ READ ALL OF THIS

Use the search function and read all the KA swaps into 620 trucks.

Thank you DatzenMike for the information on the brakes and on this thread, huge help.

Rick-Rat: no motor within the truck at this moment. The owner is selling a KA24DE with the truck if I want both. I don't think he has a transmission for it (that's why I asked which would work since I have the option to go with any transmission). I'll have to ask some more about the motor on which version and what vehicle it came out of.

Thanks again everyone, much help!

Micro: It took me a while to see that I typed it wrong haha.

He says planning to own

"He says" the standard font you insist everyone use. "planning to own" is in a bolder font. If they look the same to you then it is time to get some new glasses

Amazing all this time I did not know there was a font requirement on Ratsun.  Mike please post this information in the General Section as a Sticky.  Thank you again for educating me on Ratsun Posting Etiquette.  I will make a post it and attach it to my screen as soon as we are sure of the "Proper Font."

It's not a requirement, just the kings preference arial font, size 12, and only in black    :crying:

Size 14 is easier for us old guys to read..

What happens is someone wants to be different and picks a color impossible to distinguish easily from the background. Like this one or or this  or this. Then this font this font this font  this. this this THIS

For now Arial and size 14 in black is universally easy to read. Bold or italics for special notice. Ever wonder why we don't always like slammed cars or donk wheels, big spoilers,  hood pins, cambered wheels, fart cans? It just someone being themselves but just not understood by others. On a forum the price you pay to be understood by all others is some uniformity.

Hey guys, I didn't want to make a new thread for this since I'm still just getting information. I talked to Beebani about his disc brake adapters, but I have a question about 5 lug hubs that will work with the adapters and disc brakes (or an alternative route).

I want to do 5x114.3 lug pattern because of the wheel options and current companies tend to make those, such as Works, AG, Rotiforms, and CCWs etc (not saying those are my options, just mentioning). So my question is, if i go the route of changing out spindles to achieve the 5lug, can I use the whole assembly that works with that spindle (brakes, hubs, calibers, etc)? Or is my option to Frankenstein it and combine parts from different vehicles to work?

I just came across this post:

"I'm currently working on the 5 lug swap using the toyota hubs on the nissan dropped spindles. It requires machining the spindles.

The cheaper alternative (since you would need to get spindles) is to use toyota spindles and hubs. That would require modified lower control arms to accept the toyota ball joint." - Nis720

Will it work on a 620?

Might be ok on the fronts, what about the rear axles? Also the truck 6 x 14" rims are for trucks, not car 4 bolt. There are lots of 6 bolt chev, ford, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Isuzu on and on rims out there.
