WTB - late L20B 620 ac compressor / smog pump bracket & related h'ware

Going to be putting a Vintage Air heat/defrost/ac unit in my 79 KC over the winter, and need the ac compressor brackets, pulleys, etc. Removing the smog pump is NOT an option, so I have to have the brackets that mount both.

Anybody know if carbureted 240/260 Z's used the same bracket set up?

If anyone's got an L20B engine with the compressor and smog pump mounted on it and can send photos, that would also be much appreciated......

in a 620 at P&P that had everything stripped off the firewall, and it looks like it will fit easily where the old heater box currently lives - it'll definately be less bulky than the combined heater box and dealer installed a/c unit. It will be necessary to seal off the existing fresh air vent that the heater draws from, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm currently looking for a pair of vents that can be closed and will fit in the current fresh air vents at the ends of the dash, and will probably put a pair of center vents where the stock radio goes, with the Vintage Air controls below them where the current heater controls live. I think I'll leave the existing through-the-cowl fresh air vents and their push-pull knobs in place and just screen them off so I can get fresh air into the cab when it's cool out and a/c isn't needed.

One of the neat things about using a Vintage Air unit is that they also have foam block dummy units available with all the hose & control hook ups and bracket points installed - the foam block units only weigh a couple of pounds, so it makes it really easy to figure out your hose runs and fabricate brackets without having to risk damaging an expensive a/c head unit. From what I understand, as long as it hasn't been hacked on, they'll take the dummy unit back when you're ready to install the real one, and give you full credit on the head unit purchase.

All the factory setups I've seen for the L20B 620 (75-79) didn't use a different smog pump bracket. The smog pump setup was identical to the non-A/C, since the A/C compressor was on the passenger side, above the alternator (and required removing the fuel pump). The only other difference was the crank pulley, since it needed 3 grooves to run all those belts.

The dealer-installed A/C I saw on '72-74 620s had the driver's side mounted A/C compressor. My mom has one of those, but there never was a smog pump. There simply is no room with the steering box there to fit both pumps and the tensioner. Cars were another story, as the smog pump got driven off a second groove on the A/C compressor. You could fit the A/C and smog pump, and the tensioner, on the same side with a car since the steering gearbox was a lot further back (behind the motor mount instead of in front of it).

I've heard stories of a 620 dealer setup that had both pumps on the driver's side, but I've never seen one. The logistics would be headache inducing. Basically the smog pump would have to be nearly over the inner fenderwell.

dunno if the 620 is the same as a 510, but the 350Z vents pop in a 510. i was looking at a mazda 3 and they also look to be the same size. (my friend wouldnt let me swap them out on the rental :fu: )

Which is it? Are you replacing the vents at the ends of the dash or are you leaving the through the cowl fresh air vents and their push pull knobs in place? The push pull vents are the ones on the ends of the dash :D

620 vents are rectangular in shape. The 510 vents are round.

I think it was in the 90 amp alt. "discussion" that it came up that the z cars pulley system is located in a differant location than the 620's which would make your answer a no.

I have one almost threw it away a month ago, not sure about shipping cost since it weighs like a boat anchor!!!!

It also has a smog pump on it still which you can have if you have use for it, I could calculate the shipping if you give me your address...

conrad

Bracket by itself shouldn't weigh TOO much. Zip code for shipping is 95628......

can be closed; also planning to leave the through the cowl vents in the upper firewall in place, but disconnect them from the dash vents. The push-pull knobs connect to the cowl mounted vents, so they'll stay in place to control air flow, and hoses will be connected from the Vintage Air head unit to the vents in the ends of the dash.

I've also moved the stereo into the console - PO had Best Buy install the stereo in the dash, and they hacked up the radio hole something awful, so I'm going to reconfigure the radio hole for a pair of a/c vents as well.

I have a dash in my parts KC I won't be useing.

I'm talking JUST the metal behind the guages and under the dash pad. The dash pad is trashed and the guages are going on my parts shelf.

but the lower section is fine), so I think I'm going to use that in conjuction with an upper dash cap and see what I can come up with for end vents. Since the face plate for the gauge cluster on my KC has been so badly mutilated, I'll probably to use it to build a custom panel with center a/c vents, and may relocate the wiper switch and modify the instrument area to take VDO gauges..........
