"Save one for Hachioji" was a mantra for bombers ovrer the Toky area based on a rumored decapitation of a downed Doolitle Raider crew in Hachioji.  Anyway, due to the total destruction of Hachioji, the street layout was replated into a recognisable "East West right angle orientable and today is one of the most navigable Japanese cities to find your way about!  And its streets are not the usual Japanese narrow width.  Almost like Hokaido layout!  BYW, Hokaido was engineered with the cooperation of a team sent by US President Grant!  The US Ambassador was approached informaly by an Government agent.  Hokaido was so foreign to the normal Japanese environment that settlement plans were in a flux.  The US Ambassador realized that Hokaido had many points of similarity to New England and requested guidance from Washington.  President Grant sent a team of New Englanders to Japan!  Theyhelped with specifying steep roofs to shed snow,  2 by 4 construction to withstand the snow load,  How to cull stones from the ground, use them to build dividing field walls.  And recommending Barleyand wheat instead of rice as the main crops!  That's why Hokaido churns out such good beer and "Scotch" whiskey!  When he retired as President, General Grantmade a farewell trip to Japn.  He and his wife planted 2 trees in Ueno Park that still exist [they are in a corner behind a mounted statue of an other Meji era hero, and unfortunately are hiddenby an unemployed encampmenttoday] but are still maintained to today.  To honor his visit, the first "2 by 4" western house in Japan was built in one of the Imperial enclosuer [sorry but I can"t remember the exact location] and used to house his family during his visit.  It was totally destroyed during the March 1945 massive fire bomb raid on Tokyo {The night of snow and leaping tigers, to quote a famous HAIKU] that killed more people than either the Hiroshima or Nagasaki Atom Bomb attacks.  Strangely, an ancient Pine Treeadjacent to the Western Stlyehouse servived the fire storm and still exists.  There is a more recent tea house on the lake and it offers the tea ceremony to guests.
