An RAAF Avro Lancaster being loaded up with 4,000lb "cookies" in England, September 1943. A Lancaster could carry twice the bomb load of a Boeing B17, and included the 22,000lb "Grand Slam" bomb for special targets which was the length of a Spitfire fighter. It was the most powerful non-nuclear bomb used in warfare until 2017
