wayno
I can see in the photos supplied that either the crank is busted, or a rod is busted/thrown, which was it? Quote Link to comment

Farmer Joe
busted crank? nothins moving when youre turning it... 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
It don't have to move to know the crank or a rod came apart, the two center pistons are at the top, that means the front and back pistons should be at the bottom, well I can see that back piston is almost at the top, it's either not connected to the crank anymore, or the back part of the crank has changed position from where it is supposed to be compared to the front half of the crank(broke), and the whole thing is fucked up. busted crank? nothins moving when youre turning it... ]2eDeYe
look at the cam lobe position when it loocks up. you know close to TDC the first 2 lobes will be in the 10 oclock and 2 oclock position. if not the look at the other lobes and maybe hitting a piston or cam sprocket was whay off whn install or not set to TDC when removed ect....... was motor apart then reinstalled and not running since then History would help trans out of gear ? llift up on jack to eleininate trans issue maybe the chain tensioner is wedeged/poped out jammed? ^^.... Whoever said that ran recently was full of shit  Sorry  3 Quote Link to comment

When I bought it I pulled the lid off the air cleaner and it the cleanest Hitachi I have seen. Its amazing that was lurking under that. 2 Quote Link to comment

wayno
So I would like to know if it is a thrown rod or a bad crank, hit that back piston with a mallet, see if it moves down, if it does, it's likely a thrown rod, if it will not move, then you will have to remove the oil pan to find out, that is unless there is a hole in the side of the block that you have not noticed yet. Dime Dave
My money is on a broken #4 rod that started with a spun bearing. Whatever is wrong it will not be a simple "hone, rings & bearings" rebuild. Quote Link to comment
