barricade88
I need to replace my oil pan gasket, timing chain cover gasket, oil pump gasket, distributor gasket and possibly more. Can I or do I have to take off the head to do this? If so, is it easy? Thank you Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
Yes Well, yes he can take it off, no he does not have to. If pulling the pan, he can take the front cover off without taking the head off. Quote Link to comment

tr8er
Ahhh, I was answering the second question for you. But, after reading it again the "if so" just makes me look like a jackass. 1 Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
This is the "How I did it" section, not the "How the hell can I do it" section! You SHOULD know the difference by now. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
To access the pan, loosen the idler arm and let the steering droop. That cross brace between the lower control arm mounts to the torsion bars is also removable and unbolts. Drain oil and remove pan. Drain, remove rad, lower rad hose. Disconnect the pass hose from the thermostat housing and the intake manifold. I think the by pass tube will lift off with the timing cover. Loosen crank pulley bolt by bracing breaker bar against frame and bumping starter. (motor cranks clockwise) Set motor to TDC now, block rear wheels and place in neutral. Remove crank pulley by tapping it forward with a large socket. Take your time it will move forward and off. Watch for the woodruf keys. Now remove water pump, distributor and oil pump, probably the drive spindle will fall out. It's ok you set motor to TDC. There are two 10mm bolts from the front of the head down into the timing cover. Remove and all the front cover bolts on the timing cover and it should slide forward off the two small aligning dowels. 1 Quote Link to comment
