Canadian510
The long rod lives! Got my gear reduction starter in and the engine fired right up. The exhaust I had built for the l16 didn't exactly fit so had to do some serious massaging to at least let me take it to a local meet at Tim Horton's without deafening the neighborhood. Initial thoughts, this things got some power! Timing is slightly off and need to fine tune the carbs but am very happy so far! 2 Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Must have the Datsun gods looking after me or just some incredible luck. Looking at the local classifieds just for fun when I noticed that on an add for a real nice 66 Chevy Truck the guy mentioned he also had a Datsun pickup. No further info and one old picture of a 620. If you know atlantic canada let alone Prince Edward Island seeing any kind of Datsun is incredibly rare especially on the island (I was the only one up until this year) so I got ahold of them and went out. Was expecting to see a pretty rough truck but wanted to be sure, turns out the guy has a bone stock 1974 620 with an l18 and 4 speed with next to no rust, there's a few pinholes in one fender and a few pinholes in the box. He used it to haul around wood and put around now and again but hadn't been registered or inspected since 1981 so wasn't exposed to the salty roads here. Asking price? Try $1300! Only downside is since it hasn't been on the road since 81 the official registration is long gone, going to call up the dmv Tuesday after Thanksgiving to get them to run the Vin and make sure I can actually register it, then take it home next weekend, very excited to finally have my truck! (Hopefully) haha 4 Quote Link to comment

Lockleaf
Hooray for pandering to us ignorant Yanks!! And also, sweet truck. That is awesome that you found one in pretty decent shape when they are rare up there in the first place. Quote Link to comment
Z chopper
and that looks like west coast price not east coast price Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Called the dmv today and had a bit of a fight with the one from the city, they informed me that I couldn't buy a vehicle without papers and that the previous owner had to come in with proof of ownership and get registration in his name. When I told them that there was no papers (for the 100th time) they go "well just get him to bring in a picture" and got mad when I asked what the difference in him and myself bringing in a picture since it hasn't been registered since the 80s here and a picture doesn't prove anything. Eventually gave up and called another location in the country, their response? Trace the Vin, bring a picture and we'll get you on your way. Happy that's out of the way now! 3 Quote Link to comment

Its always some FATchick behind the desk All the city dmv's are just like you described, the rural ones aren't too bad. The one I was talking to said that with the truck being off the road for as long as it has there won't be any info on it so they're just reissuing me new registration for it. Takes a few days and they'll mail it out to me once it's done. Crazy how two government offices can be so different lol Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Got the 620 home! Has a few small holes in the bed but other than that this thing is pretty mint. Also upon looking at some of the paperwork that came with the truck it only has ~50,000 miles on it! No wonder the interior is so clean. Waiting for the flatbed to pick it up, truck runs and drives but the tires were very cracked and not safe to drive on. In the garage with the 510, first thing was to take off those ugly mirrors Can't wait to get this build started! Thinking about lowering it quite a bit with some wide wheels with big negative offset to start. Motor wise will probably build up my 2nd l20b for boost ;) 1 Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Got a call from the dmv and the truck is all good to go with new registration in my name! Glad that's over with so now can focus on plans for it. Like i mentioned before am thinking of running a carbed turbo motor built out of one of the spare l20bs I have lying around but to build one properly that wouldn't grenade the first time it seen some nice boost (including the Ignition boxes, fuel pumps etc) would cost in the $5k range.... The price of a SR with some goodies running in the truck, or a KA-T... these are the things that keep me up at night lol Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Finally got back home for the first time in 2 months to get the rigs ready for winter. Found one of my front drums is out of round on the 620 so I'll eventually be swapping them for discs. Also thought about what I'm doing motor wise for the 620 and I'm really leaning towards a big turbo sr20, will take more work then putting it in the 510 but everyone has sr 510s and the truck should handle the power better being full frame. 1 Quote Link to comment

Canadian510
just leave the L Motor and no head ache at all. finnish 1 project at a time ,Trust me Hey nothing ventured nothing gained right...right? :/ In any case don't plan on ripping the 620 apart for anything quite yet, got word that my transfer is going through to a different trade at work so I'll be leaving for 9 months to get retrained and then sent to another location. Don't want to box up and ship a half torn apart truck lol. The 510 is pretty much done now, just small things left, make a throttle cable setup for the webers, get bigger webers, some 60 series tires, and a nissan competition header to replace the manifold. Car runs and drives but isn't where I want it yet. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I think KA SR in a 510 as more room and EZer Trucks have the torsion bar in the way. plus trucks more disposable anyways. High pwer in truck is hard to put to the ground(spin outs) my 521 wear out it goes FREE to however my 510 NEVER. Not many left Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Flipping through the new Roadkill magazine (by David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of Hot Rod) when I come across this Sent off some pictures months ago and kind of forgot about it. Had to run back to the superstore to buy another copy haha. In other news sold my weber 40s and bought a set of 45s, hoping they'll work nicer on the long rod! 1 Quote Link to comment

I don't have any pictures sorry, but if you Google nissan comp spray bar you'll get a few. Literally just a hollow straight bar with some holes drilled in it that squirt oil on the cam. You drill 3 holes in the valve cover (2 for mounting and one for the feed) Quote Link to comment
Eccles
cool truck mate, will you be doing a separate thread for it? or will the build be in this here thread? Quote Link to comment

I'll be doing a separate thread when I eventually start building it. Might be leaving for some retraining for work soon so not doing anything with it yet. Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Finally got around to getting my comp header installed, Primed/painted then wrapped. Nowhere local does ceramic coating and with me leaving to ontario for work in a few weeks decided to go this route so the car will be driveable while I'm gone incase dad needs to move it in/out of the garage. Spent a good 30 minutes turning it every way possible trying to make it fit without dropping the centerlink but eventually had to go that route. Of course it didn't want to budge so after spending awhile beating on it I eventually went out and bought a tierod end wedge kit and had the 2 joints off in 5 minutes. A lot can be said for having the right tool lol. Tomorrow morning I'll go about putting the new 45s on and then I'll be waiting for my valve cover gasket, throttle cable and bottom linkage that I ordered to arrive. Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Well went to throw on my 45s this morning and find that my runners on my manifold aren't long enough. The flange where it bolts to the carb rests right on the header and leaves about an inch gap between the manifold and the block. Guess I need to look for a long runner manifold to clear it. Hooked up my edelbrock intake and holley carb for now just to have something on there. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
The stock cast iron manifold is just as good and dont crack and no fitting issues.(steering or otherwise) Baz at Datsport says Cast manifold is good up to 150hp Quote Link to comment
Canadian510
Been awhile since i posted here! Left PEI to get retrained into a new trade at work so was sent to Ontario till January. Decided to angle my intake manifold to clear the header which i had dropped off to a local machinist by my dad in PEI back in April. Heard from him today that the intake should be done pretty soon, the only guy who does machine work back home had a huge order from a local company that pushed back his other customers. My vacation from work starts a day before the biggest show in Atlantic Canada so hoping he can get everything mostly squared away before that. Grand prize this year is a 1967 Malibu SS, everyone who enters has a ballot go into a hat and the draw is made the last day of the show, can't miss out on that! And also found a new picture of my car i didn't know was out there. I have a new computer background now haha Quote Link to comment
