Trucky-chan KA-T 620 project

Recommended Posts

Spoke with the machine shop yesterday.  Crank is getting ground this week then it is just checking bearing clearance and deck height. Supposedly I'll have the short block back next week.

Went to the local scrap yard the other day, and for the first time ever, there were no D21's on the lot.  I was hoping to grab SOCH alt brackets for my power steering delete, but instead only ended up with a KA24DE MAF and one ellipsoid.

I've managed to get a bit done the last couple of days.  Engine came out last night.

Then this morning the shop that was rebuilding the head called so I took the afternoon off to go pick it up.

Then a buddy dropped off one of his spare transmissions.

s14 5 speed.

Decided as long as I have the engine out again I should actually clean everything up and paint the bay.

I also figured as long as I am at it I should go ahead and remove any wires that are no longer being used.  I should be able to start stripping down the paint and rust in the bay tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to throw some paint on early next week.  Still waiting on my block and a hand full of miscellaneous odds and ends.

Finally got my block back and the shop saved me the trouble of having to paint it.

Also got the engine bay pretty much ready to go.

The chemical stripper I used turned everything a coppery color, I kinda like it, so I think it will stay.

The place I ordered my timing set from seems to be having some trouble getting me all of the right parts, hopefully the third time is the charm.  Once I have that I will be able to actually assemble this thing.

Nonpictorial update.  Finally have all of my timing bits, now just waiting on head alignment dowels so I can start getting the engine assembled.  Brake lines are all cleaned up, I don't recommending hand sanding all of those bitches.  Started tearing into the factory harness trying to figure out what all can be cut out and how to better route the remainder so they are less noticeable.

Finally back for some more updates. It sure would be nice if I could just work on the truck all day instead of working and having to be a responsible individual, but I can't.  That is my way of saying that nothing looks hugely different.

Engine looks a little more like an engine.

Took a little longer than anticipated considering by the time I got around to putting things back together I realized that the lower gasket set that I got sent was for an SR.  Luckily most of what I needed was available locally same day or was silicon from the factory.  Hoping to drop the engine in by the end of the week, although I would like to rework my engine harness a bit before I do.

Brake/clutch lines are back in, along with the brake booster.

Beyond that I have mostly been ordering parts which will hopefully find their way on to the truck in a couple whirlwind long nights in the near future.  I still need to decide what I am going to do for a fuel cell.

got the engine harness pretty well laid out on the engine tonight.  I still have a couple of wires to remove, but most everything else is clustered how I need them to mount under the intake.

In the midst of it all.

Perspective new home for the coil.

I'll be keeping the swirl control valves for now so I needed to keep one of the solenoids from the vacuum tube rats nest on the back of the head. I relocated it to the lower intake.  There will be considerably fewer vacuum lines when I'm finished with it.

Well I finally got tired of looking at my engine on the stand.

xmfqIbp.jpg

I also threw the hood back on so I could test fit the new radiator. I was a little concerned there might be some clearance issues, but hood closed with room to wiggle.

Although clearance with the coil is a little tight, so I think I'll keep it on the core support between the rad and headlight like I did with the L.

I learned a few things about my transmission (s14 5 speed in case I haven't already mentioned that) last night. Firstly, it is a huge pain in the ass to get into position.  I ended up having to unbolt the engine and slide it forward to get the trans lifted into place, but

Erc0ZvB.jpg

secondly, it appears to already have a mechanical speed gear in it.

lzm36c8.jpg

Of course my speedo cable doesn't reach, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Lastly, looks like the cross member mod is a little more than just opening up the mounting holes.

Unfortunately this was just a test fit and it is going to have to come back out before it can go back in for good.

Nice shot, first time I have seen the S14 trans in relation to the crossmember.

Well done on the relocation.

I made a thing.  More specifically I made a plate to mount the ecm and can-am box to.

MLXXhbM.jpg

I still need to make the brackets to mount the ecm to the plate after which I'll decide if it needs a little more bracing. Only sheet metal I had available right now in a size I could use is a touch flimsy.  On the other side of things, while this space isn't the most convenient spot to get to for checking fuses and relays on the can-am it does minimize the loss of storage.  Glove box shouldn't loose more than a half an inch or so in height and a negligible loss from the under dash tray.  It also keeps the foot well and firewall clear.  I can even reach the convoluted diagnostic screw and led from just under the front side of the dash.

Back from a much needed and overall pretty awesome vacation, and haven't quite gotten back to the truck yet.  I did however order the majority of the fuel system bits, everything short of the braided lines I'll be running which I will source locally once I have the fuel cell and hard lines mounted. Also picked up a new to me toy that should be quite helpful.

MyjTuU9.jpg

I promptly set to making a rudimentary Stand for it.  Still needs a little more work, but it is mostly finished.

I'm beginning to wonder how I ever accomplished anything without a band saw. It is quickly becoming a favorite tool. Not really much of an update on the truck front other than I got around to zipping out some mounting brackets for the ecu.

VCce0Rv.jpg

Band saw front got a little more done as well.  Could still use some refinement, but I have a functional stand.

Well still not running, but I did get another piece of the puzzle, some seats out of an 86ish escort GT.

ASe2Xwo.jpg

dmIYWng.jpg

I had to remove the sliders since they weren't anywhere close to lining up and they were a couple of inches too tall.  Based on my test fit there really isn't much need for a slider anyway I'm pretty short and with the seat all the way back against the rear of the cab it is the perfect distance for me, just means anyone taller won't be comfortable should they be driving my truck for whatever reason.

Well the hard part of the new fueling system is complete. The new lines basically follow along where the factory feed line ran.

Starting from the back

eaTfN5e.jpg

Over the frame, which was a treat. Luckily the aluminum line is very easy to manipulate so making the bends by hand isn't a problem.

V1z0tRz.jpg

Finally up the frame again and into the engine bay.

B5lQypI.jpg

Next order of business will be deciding where the pump and filters will be going and making my soft lines.  For now I am planning to use the stock fuel rail so I will also need to get those hard lines converted to use tube nuts instead of clamp on hoses.

Trans is finally back out for cleaning and seal replacement. Trans tunnel is marked for shifter clearancing and new flywheel is installed.

I went with the "White bunny" upgrade, which for those of you who haven't been researching 240sx clutches uses a larger disk/pressure plate along with a flywheel with more contact area.  The cheap version of this upgrade is to go grab an off the shelf D21 clutch/flywheel. This upgrade does require the removal of the little brass alignment pin on the flywheel mounting flange, but is otherwise a bolt on affair.
