That and electric as a whole, all things considered is much more pollutive in its current state. And will stay that way unless Fusion power becomes viable in our lifetime. This argument lost its steam a while back. Individuals, utilities, and corporations are producing clean energy (solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, etc.) With my island as an example, 1 in 10 houses has a pv system generating solar electricity. This trend is escalating at unimaginable rates across the globe. As are other renewable energies. All that is needed to drive it is a rise in the price of oil. That happened, and won't un-happen. Tesla production is over 50% renewable energy. And that number will go into the 90's by 2017. Tesla owners are buying PV systems with their cars often. No statistic available. I know two tesla owners, and three leaf owners. All of which also own solar electric systems. On top of that, we crunched the numbers in my office to see what the reality was. Considering the losses in AC to DC conversion, as well as standard grid inefficiencies, compared to the in efficiency of today's efficient vehicle. (We baselined a 2010 honda civic, sorry), the result gave the Tesla over 20% cleaner. That means the dude charging his tesla in his Cali garage from dino diesel electricity from the utility company is over 20% cleaner than the guy in his Civic. This used the company released efficiency standards. So the guy driving his tesla the way I would drive a Tesla might not see the same results, but the comparison was objective and fair all things even on the pedal. The rise of electric is finally unstoppable. Thank you Elon Musk. Also, thank you for the 500% return on my investmen in TSLAt. I sold last week!!! Really, the clean argument is grasping at straws. Solar City is a prey on the populous philosophy company. And Space X... why? Either way I'm stoked to usher in the electric vehicle, Tesla, Nissan, Mercedes, whatever. It will always have a place in our market. And I hope the H combustion engine relieves us from it's prevalence soon. My excitement for the electric car is two fold. Yes it will reduce our need for oil significantly, but more importantly, it will drive a new era of battery innovation. With every major car company battling for the most efficient, light and affordable battery, we better get some new ideas on the plate. Or the fuel cell takes over. If nothing else, the battery re-locate mod for your dime could get easier with smaller batteries... Captain, this isn't aimed at you. I'm clear that you will not change your opinion. Quite frankly, why should you. Arizona has electricity rates at 1/4 of what I pay, and gas at half of what I pay. If I lived there I doubt I'd have a PV system and dream of a no gas vehicle. If we would invest in it and meke it reliable and secure, and if we can make power environmental, and not able to be taken out by any 5 guys with AK47s, then yes, electric has a future. I dont however think that the combustion engine will just die, I believe we will see the innovation within it that we SHOULD have seen 40 years ago and nobody cared. Gasoline engines at 2.0 liters should be getting 200 mpg, not 35, we have let tech pass us by and its appalling. We need to concentrate on India and China being more environmentally friendly if we EVER want to clean up this planet, because they are the number one problem and they arent even thinking about doing anything about it right now. But your point about Musk is essentially how I feel about him as well. If they can make the cars environmentally friendly to produce then that would help too, since manufacturing is the major polluter in the world, not cars. And currently it takes up to 3x the ammount of energy to build a hybrid or electric car than a regular old gas one. Fix that and they will be miles ahead too. I was substantially more interested in fuel cell/internal hydrogen/oxygen combustion, since those things are naturally occuring chemicals and can essentially run in a internal combustion engine with enough compression, they also put oput water, would not be dificult to work on or involve 10,000 volt electric shock, and all mechanics today could be easily retrained to work on hydrogen combustion motors, since they would work off the same principals, except put out water as emissions. Theres other options that dont require mass ammounts of highly polutive materials like copper, solar panels, magnets, plastic, ect, ect. Quote Link to comment

I have a lot of family in Norway and visit from time to time, this sort of blew me away, because over here, many of us talk like it can't be done or won't work, but...it's being done. Awesome idea, but it seems a system like that could get quickly overladed though. it will take some seriously complex expansion control and planning to avoid hundreds of stranded cars if a station goes out of service, or runs out of fuel in the middle of nowhere.
