Everyone calls that rats nest of a pickup a 'sleeper' but I don't think it really qualifies. Shitty paint and a busted up body are really not going to take my attention away from the fact that it has slicks and an idle that shakes the ground.

Something like this is more along the lines of what I consider a sleeper.

"I fixed up muh truck! How ya like it?"

I'm sorry but that is how those half assed "rat rod" vehicles look to me. Especially seeing them at shows. With so many rides that people have spent lots of time and money on perfecting, they just throw on wheels and airbags and get in? NO! You can't just throw something together in five minutes and call it good.

Now this truck is more like it! Both are pretty much the same truck. This one I know is a 1953 Chevrolet.

A friend who owns a body shop built it. Spent the better part of a year fixing it up properly. It started out looking like that. He also did all the work on that green 720 I posted earlier. He will be doing the body work on my Datsun next spring, hopefully, if my broke ass can scrape up the money by then!

Those wheels are terrible....

I see this sort of thing all the time. I always think that the truck was totally done by someone else and the only contribution the current owner made was wheels and tires. In other words...he had ONE job and fucked it up.

Look again.  The devil's in the details.  The "half assed" truck  has some seriously neatly done mods hiding in every pic.  I'd wager even the paint has more time in it than the truck you posted.

I agree a lot of the time.  Some of the Rat Rods that I've seen are very much half assed.  This just ain't one.

I highly doubt that. Maybe the paint has more time aging! And I see no "details" except for new wheels and tires.

To each his own I guess...

And if you modify it at all with that Old beat look, either it stands out like a sore thumb, or you have to camouflage it.  I'm pretty sure MOST of that truck got it's look naturally, but I think there are some touches that were added by the builder and then blended in with the rest.
