sr71sss
just pick one from a late model 620 with the 2.0L motor in it, I have seen one in my local jY, from what I have read they are the same length as the 4 spd from the same model, I could be wrong since I have yet to do one so don't quote me on that LOL...:D Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The '72.5-'73 used a short tail 4spd, same as the '68-'73 510 Datsun car. From '74 up, a long tail 4 and much later a long tail 5 spd was used. The best thing to do is climb under and measure the length just to be absolutely sure. Your '73 4 spd should measure +- 26.3 inches from the engine to the drive shaft. You may get an extra inch or so from bending the tape around stuff, but if you measure within a few inches of 26" then you have the short tail. This tranny will also have a removable oil pan on the bottom, with drain bung, and the speedo will be on the driver's side. (BTW, the long tail 4spd measures 31.5" no less) Pretty sure this is the tranny you have for that year of truck. So the only 5spd that I can think of that will, 'drop in', is the '77-'79 200sx 'dogleg' shift pattern tranny. Strong enough for an L16. May need tranny mount modifications. Another option is to 'convert' your truck so that the later 5 spds will fit. The shorter front drive shaft from a '74-'79 will fit and work with the longer 5 spd. Not sure if your tranny mount will work if reversed, maybe a mount from any '74-'79 will do the trick. Ideally, a 5 spd, (with longer speedo cable) tranny mount and the complete drive shaft out of a '77 - '79 should bolt into your '73. There aren't a lot of the 'drop in' doglegs around, but there were lots of the longer FS5W71B trannys used in '77-'83 280z/zx cars, '77-'79 trucks, '80-'83? Maximas and the '80 720 truck 2wd only. Lots of trannys to choose from. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
NO, the new clutch can stay. Keep the collar that holds the throw out bearing and use on the new tranny. It's matched to the clutch so stays with the clutch. Quote Link to comment
