nbesheer
Okay so I pulled an Electronic ignition from a 1980 720 and a coil from a 280ZX since the one on the truck was gone/hard to find. Where I am stuck is there is this little condenser looking thing on my 610 that screws into the strut tower and connects to the coil. what I need to know is if it connects to the positive, negative, or if I even need it ? Thanks for any help you can offer. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Don't need it I would think. Quote Link to comment

comply
The ballast resistor? I bypassed mine. Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
If the 280 Z coil came out of a car with EI then yes you can bypass the condensor. You can also run the stock coil & keep the ballast hooked up. The EI coil will be taller,& wider than a points coil. Quote Link to comment
racerx
Purpose of condensor is min. burning out your points and since you are converting to Elec. distributor then I don't think you need it. If it is ballast resistor then you need it, I assume, since this reduces voltage. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Don't need it I would think. Well I checked, and there is a condenser on the '78 (remote igniter) and the '79 (matchbox) also the '80 720 L20B. Maybe noise supression??? Quote Link to comment
racerx
simply put a condenser stores current so that your points do not get burned out. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
the small condensors by the coill are not needed if going to a Pertronix or Nissan EI. Quote Link to comment
zerow
There are two condensors in a typical points system: 1) at the side of the points distributor, like racerx mentions, for storing and releasing electrical current. 2) at the coil, like datzenmike mentions, for noise suppression from the coil and associated electronics. Most modern radios can take care of the noise, but I remember when older radios could not. It was like a tach for the blind. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
POS to the condenser (capacitor) to GROUND Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
then it was definitely in there for noise suppression. Quote Link to comment
