twistedimages
Great looking interior sheet metal work. A word of caution about the heat generated by rotor motor exhaust systems. They get incredibly hot and you will need a decent air gap and/or some serious heat sheilding. I've seen gear lube boil on the passenger floor of an RX7 racecar. DEFINITELY going to be wrapping the header and most of the exhaust, and running heat shields near my upper control arm and along part of the floor. I've seen how hot they get! Thanks for the tip, Dave! Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
Couple of new photos: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/417.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/418.jpg He said working around the rear half of the cage has been a "nightmare" - looks like he's got it figured out, though! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/419.jpg Tunnel looks like it's almost done, too. Not crazy about the hump in the floor for the starter, but I think it's far enough forward that I can put my pedals behind it. Edited October 27, 2022 by twistedimages oics 5 Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
She's home! Drove out to Bob's shop yesterday and picked up the car. I was worried that it wouldn't live up to the photos, but it's even better in person!! It was raining the entire drive there and back, so I have some flash rust to clean up, but my car is back home safe and sound: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/421.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/420.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/422.jpg The rear wheel tubs are removable to access the upper airbag mounts- a nice touch that I hadn't even mentioned to him. Everything is just tacked into place for now, so the next step is about a million little welds to get everything stitched together! I'm PUMPED to get this thing back together- more pics when the sun comes out! Edited October 27, 2022 by twistedimages oics 9 Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
what gauge sheet metal did he use? ... it looks awesome!!! It's all 18 gauge. Even with everything just tacked in, it feels really solid- I imagine it'll be great once it's fully welded. Thanks! 2 Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
As fun as it is to look at the car in a semi-complete state, everything has to come out so I can get all of the panels fully welded. So I ditched work around noon yesterday and got into the garage! http://www.twistedimages.us/510/425.jpg Everything was so much easier when there wasn't a floor in the way of everything! I had to get UNDER the car to unbolt the exhaust, driveshaft, and transmission crossmember- what a pain! Then, I forgot about the shifter- I was tugging on the hoist, wondering why the hell the engine wouldn't come forward... oops! Finally, the header won't come out unless the engine is lifted a couple of inches now that there's a firewall installed. But overall the job went smoothly, and I was able to get everything pulled and put away by myself (actually, my son helped steer the hoist and engine back into the garage): http://www.twistedimages.us/510/426.jpg I'll drag it down to the shop this weekend and see how much welding we can get done! The Mini roof is a "stickerbomb" design that I created- bunch of British Invasion-era band logos, other British stuff, and a few of my favorite companies' logos mixed in along with. It definitely gets noticed, for better or worse! 4 Quote Link to comment

Putting 100 miles a day on it, and dealing with some slightly rough mountain roads, leave me stuck with my NM springs for now. Fun little cars though! I thought about graffiti for the roof, but it would have to be done custom like yours. All the pre made stuff looks generic. Quote Link to comment

When it's done I'll start hitting shows and bugging the media guys- for now it's just another unfinished project! As for miles per gallon, I don't know and I don't care! Haha- if I wanted fuel economy I definitely wouldn't have gone rotary! 2 Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
Been a bit since my last update, but work is progressing slowly but surely! My buddy has been working on all of the sheetmetal welding in his spare time- he broke his hand the week after I dropped the car off, so that definitely put him behind a bit! I cruised by his shop last Friday, and here's what he's got done so far: http://www.twistedimages.us/510/430.jpg http://www.twistedimages.us/510/431.jpg There's a lot to be welded and smoothed out, but he's doing a great job! Hoping to pick it up this weekend, and then the real fun can begin in my garage! Edited October 27, 2022 by twistedimages oics 9 Quote Link to comment

twistedimages
Whats next up on the list after the floor is welded and smoothed out? looks damn good. EVERYTHING is next! Haha As far as fabrication goes, I need to weld on the front shock mounts, one more crossmember on the front end, revise my core support mounting, and figure out sway bars. Once that's done, everything needs to be disassembled for final welding, cleanup, and paint (not the exterior, of course!). Inside, I need to make some more brackets for the dash mounting, seat brackets, harness mounts, and make brackets to mount my master cylinders. Once all of that is done, wiring, plumbing, reassembly, and probably a long list of other things I've forgotten!! 2 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Looking very very good. Love it. when you say paint you mean the the whole interior and engine bay or? and what color you have in mind.  1 Quote Link to comment
