So your car seems to have a steering box ,, my 83 has a rack ,, what sup wit dat??

 

This copper zxt is a converted turbo from N/A.

My 81 zxt has a rack :).

 

It`s ok if you don`t know

I don't know anything ... :rofl: ( no really .... I don't much of anything lol )

Well I did a compression test on her after #5 cylinder was missing.

Everything read great numbers except 0-psi on #5 ... doh ! .. repeated carefully and still the same results ... double checko :-/

I'll checkout the turbo while it's out ... likely with a 15-20lb hammer .... if ya know what I mean ;) ... :D :lol: jk

lol thanks Arche ... I got it all done today in the evening ... but truth be re-vealed ... feel like a slow-poke most of the time ... probably because I am a slow poke ... lol.

Shoulda seen the first engine I learned on... poor thing ... :rofl:

 

You should see my bro tear through cars and fix them... it's absolutely UN-real !!!!! :blink: :blink:

Yeah just changing short-blocks is a real possiblity , but am curious what is wrong really first before making a decsion for sure.

I didn't get the chance to get much done today.

 

240mm 280zx turbo EXEDY Clutch.

(9) 12mm bolts to pull the pressure plate off. Go around and loosen each 1/4 turn until no tension is felt.

Pull off the disc + pressure plate then set on a clean non-greasy surface.

Disc has lots of life left in it.

See the bolt-pattern on this ? 9 holes total in sets of 3 groups = 240mm clutch system. 6-bolt at the crank (for you L4 guys).

Pressure plate looks good , and still has the machine marks. No blue spots or burns.

Stick all the pressure plate bolts back-in their home , so you don't have to play "where did I put that ... ? " game when assembly time comes :)

Flywheel has to come off , so grab either a 3/4" or 19mm Impact or Deep 1/2" socket.

In my case I'll be using a 1/2" Milwaukee electric impact gun with a 19mm Ingersol Rand impact socket.

Before taking out the last one ... rremember to either secure it with wire/bolt/hand/etc ... or make sure the flywheel is "sticky" enough on the machined surface so it doesn't drop and bang your big toe...

One by one through up the engine stand adapter and thread in each bolt ... then tighten them in sequence evenly.

It would seem... It's temporary enough to not cause problems and pull right off before re-installation , but durable enough to stay on (within reason) and keep the debris out for in between work.

((( I posted a question in general/technical , and for documentation purposes I will just go ahead and post it here as well. :) )))

 

The seals/bearings are going to have to be replaced on the Turbo itself , and I have yet to get it apart to make sure it's indeed rebuild-able.

No housing contact on compressor side , and yet to see what the turbine side looks like.

According to Hybridz.org ... it is a stocker T3 flange / T04 turbo and nothing special.

Although mine does say "AiResearch" on the compressor housing , so I just to double check that it is what it is said to be.

A few on hybridz have previously stated that Nissan used these as "stock" turbo setups from the factory.

I've contacted G-pop shop as well and am waiting for them to get back to me on parts compatability :) .

 

It "appears" my options are as follows in case any one option doesn't workout (any relevant input here is appreciated).

-Swap on my other known good turbo to this engine and call it good.

-Rebuild this existing turbo in-question.. if parts are available (not entirely sure at this point) Although they "appear" to be standard parts.

-Buy an already rebuilt stock L28ET turbocharger from TurboCity.com for around $360 ? (I'll have to look again) No warranty available.

-Buy a cheap ebay T3/T04 turbocharger ... have a custom down-pipe made to accept the v-band style hookup (maybe some sites offer a bolt-on flange) ,,,, and a v-band clamp ,,,, make sure waste-gate is available or adaptable , and hopefully the whole assembly is clocked correct so I don't have to re-pipe stuff :blink: ( not entirely sure what is what in this area at this point.)

If I were to just rebuild the existing turbocharger in the pictures above...

gpopshop.com has standard as well as complete kits 3 styles of turbo seal types that you are to choose from.(according to which seal your turbocharger incorporates). (Ebay has a cheapy kit , etc etc...)

-1pc encapsulated carbon seal kit (Note:G-pop recommends this as a general guideline kit for 280zxt's on their website)

-4pc carbon assembly seal kit

- Dynamic seal kit

 

Has anyone rebuilt this specific turbo pictured above ( or similiar on their L28et/VG30ET) or know anything about the actual seal it truly is/specifications on it ?

 

I'm actually relatively new to turbo ownership :lol: , and I'm sure I'll decide which option is best for me :)

DTP the Turbo pictured (TO4E) is an oldschool upgrade from the stock T3 280zx turbo I can tell you by experience this turbo spools quicker than the stock T3 it's worth keeping the rebuild kits are fairly easy to get. I don't remember exactly where on HBZ I read but I remember somewhere in the ball park of 500-600hp max which is more then enough, but obviously there's much better turbos out there if you plan on parting with it let me know I'd be interested in buying it! The turbo was already installed on the engine you pulled from a 1983 280zxt I got in Cali as donor car for the engine swap.

Spooling faster is pretty cool...

 

But which rebuild kit do I use with this turbo.. is what I'm confused over slighty ?
