Finally found a Datsun! 79 620 pickup california stepside

Recommended Posts

Finally found a truck! Its been ten years too long since my last Datsun and this will make number 8. Exactly what I wanted although its gonna need some work mainly minor mechanical and maintenance type stuff. Its a 79 620, l20b, 5spd, California stepside. interior needs work(will redo myself, as I do upholstery on the side) but all parts are there even the console. Truck was garaged for many years, everything seems to work except for the speedo (odometer works but needle only moves between 40-60 mph). I pulled into the driveway after driving it 35 miles in rushour traffic on I5 and 205 and the only problem was a heater hose was leaking antifreeze, all gas and fluid hoses will be replaced soon. Steering wheel has 4 inches of play so all steering/suspention components need attention.  Tags expire this month so Ill need to deq it but smog pump is locked up and inop. Anyone have trouble passing DEQ without the smog equipment? tips to fix this would be good. Anyway I will be in need of a nice set of wheels in the future 16x7 would be good. I may want to find a regular shortbed so the stepside might be for trade/sale soon haven't decided but if anyone has a straight rust free shortbed (preferably hooks shaved) with good taillights let me know. My plans include 720 drop spindles/torsion, and 720 4x4 leafs and 3in blocks, scrap the smog for a cannon or edelbrock intake, weber 32/36 or single side draft, mild cam, L16 exhaust manifold, upgraded ignition, msd coil, taylor custom ign wires (it has a matchbox already), just to name a few. If anyone has ideas/suggestions let me know. Engine pics tomorrow! Oh and by the way I paid $1200 for it!

Nice post :) I kinda like it with the stepside bed.... I'm not to sure i've ever seen a 620 stepside truck. Is that factory or some aftermarket thingamajig?

I think I'd run it with that truck bed and maybe get a single exhaust smoke stack and run in up at the corner of the cab, outside the bed. Like they used to do on those old Dodge "LITTLE RED EXPRESS" trucks. I always thought those were cool. :)

Correction, hydrocarbons standard: 300ppm passed at 81, CO standard: 2.5% passed at 0.9663%, CO2 standard 6% passed at 10%. Inspector looked under the hood and after looking all over the engine STILL passed visual with inop smog pump lol. He must like datsuns!

Here are some engine pics. Today I tried straightening my hood hinges so there isn't such a huge gap on the driverside. Unfortunately that just shifted the gap to the passenger side. Looks like Ill be pullin the grill, fenders, bumper and valance to address the damage on the LH front core support.

the stepside was aftermarket, not a dealer option.

I like your thinking for the exhaust Dirttrack510

plus one of the webers, mikunis and cam... no on the header tho. Headers are leaky and not really all they're cracked up to be. Instead go for an L16 finned cast iron exhaust manifold, they flow great and are more highly recommended than a header. Also toss a closed chamber head on there for a bit more compression

Went to Gladstone Nissan today and picked up new shifter bushings. Got the Ratsun discount, that will come in handy for larger purchases. LLoyd in the parts dept. was very helpful, oh and the girls working there sure are hot especially Andrea!(very helpful as well) I had no shifter pin bushings at all before so no more annoying rattle in third gear. Going to order a Nissan motorsports catalog tomorrow.

Made a egr block off/pcv plate today. 3/16 steel, 8x1.25 studs, part of a egr tube, threaded hex from pcv tube welded on end of tube, drilled about a 9/16 hole in plate pushed tube into hole and welded from inside and ground flat copied hole from egr manifold and drilled plate. This is how you make a egr blockoff and retain pcv system.
