Buyer fell through, so i kept her!

well recently i tried to sell my rhd 1979 fairlady, but the buyer

fell through so i kept it.

i had to clean the gas tank out and hot wire a fuel pump, and

then it started, but it was running pretty crappy. all the

spark plugs were replaced, the fuel filter is new, fuel pump is new,

new plug wires, new oil and filter...

so being the curious guy i am i unplugged the afm/maf and the idle

jumped up from 400rpms to 800 and idled perferct, plug the sensor

back in runs like shit, grab 2 spare sensors and they all make it

run like shit. so i left it unplugged and drove it and it runs great,

why would this be??? it is a jdm car but it should need a sensor

just like every other car ya know, it is a little jerky driving if i am

barely on the gas but full throttle or off the throttle it  is great.

the car is running rich i can tell by the gas smell and cloud coming

out the exhaust at full throttle, thats the only draw back i have

come across. is it ok to run the car without the afm/maf?

having just a filter on the tb sounds absolutely amazing btw,

it growls and whistles ridiculously loud lol i like it i just dont

like not having all the proper stuff working

another question is i am not getting power back to the

fuel pump so ran a hot wire and switch,is there any fuseblock

under hood or somewhere i can pull power from and have it

shut off with the ignition? in my rx7 i did it that way but this

has fusible links and i cant find a place to tap into

thanks in advance i will make a video of it running and

show you all the intake growl its awesome!

and it was up for 3 hours before i bumped lol, i still had motivation

to wrench on it i am sure you know the feeling

Youre right, I just looked again. Its weird that it showed the same hour, but only a few minutes apart on my phone last night. I apologize for my wacky phone. :)

old pics, but it is a little cleaned up on the inside,

it runs and drives now i am just having issues, today

it did not want to start at all and after i finally got it to

barely idle i was peaking around the engine bay

and about shit myself... the po didnt tighten the

spark plugs all the way and i was watching air/fuel

mixture ooze out the spark plug holes... i tightened

them all down, restarted it, got it to idle a little better

and then revved the hell out of her.

once its warmed up it runs great, still is running with

no afm, i have butt loads more torque and power

with all 6 plugs tightened lol night and day difference.

i can tell its running extremely rich without the afm but

with an afm as soon as i tap the gas it dies instantly.

so its still afm less and i can see black puffs out the

exhaust

i am pretty clueless on where to go now, and is it ok to

run the fuel pump hotwired so its constantly full bore?

another question is why isnt there a write up on

wiring in a fuse block to get rid of fusible links!

am i going to have to attempt this myself and if so...

ill need help with this z, i have only ever done the

conversion in an rx7

Yikes to all that,
test and replace the afm if bad is where you go from there.

There is tons of info on swapping to various fuse blocks though its pretty straight forward.

I wouldnt blame the PO since you tried to sell the car in the condition you have it in now. lol

i tried to sell it without ever trying to turn a wrench on it, then

the buyer fell through and that lit a fire under my ass haha

i had to get it running, and it does run... just puffs black

like a chipped diesel.

has anyone ever had an afm problem like this???

i have tried 3 of them and none helped

Why dont you go look up the write up for the carbon trail on the afm.

I was having idling issues with mine, then I did the steps to move the carbon trail, (very easy).

The car actually started right up on the first turn of the key. As they get old the trail wears out on the same spot, so you have some room to play with it, and can lower it.

Here I'll save you the trouble. I think carbon trail is confusing, that refers to diagnosis of problems in the ignition system like the cap and plugs. Carbon track sounds right to me.
Idk if this is the write up Prime used but I have used it to refresh afm's I've sold.

Or carbon tracking lol, whichever sound better. I was pulling it out of my memory bank.

Yeah thats the one I used. My s130 would bog down and have a real rough idle. And would take ages to get it to turn on.

Mind you the only thing I had put was fresh gas and fix a couple gas lines from the filter. And a missing plug wire.

And my cas isnt in the best condition if youve seen my thread lol.

But you should give that a try what 72240z posted.

And all I really did was step 4 and 6 off the write up.

mine is just a 2 seater, i will try that tomorrow after work,

i have done the spring tension loosening before when doing

an rx7 afm swap to a miata, but i didnt know the carbon

track info, sounds promising, i will post results tomorrow

night

Any way that I can convince you to measure out the placement to your fender mirrors? Preferably from the front of your fender at the sugar scoop to the crease on the outside?

Edit: actually, looks like its right on the edge of the fender.

Link to comment

ya i could probably do that for you tomorrow or saturday, i need to measure anyways

when i swap fenders because the passenger side is smashed, i just picked up my

spare engines today, one is a usdm 1980 l28 and a usdm 1976 l28, and they both

have way more vacuum bs on them, whats the best intake mainfold to use???

a long time ago when i had my 81 turbo i remember something about n42 and

the p90 head make a good combo or something, i just want to have the best

parts i can for it on it
