thatll make your coolant drop..

engine gets hot, temp and pressure in cooling system goes up, cap bypasses into what should be an overflow tank.

engine cools down, coolant system fills back up from overflow tank...

no tank, wont fill back up. just stick the other end of the tube in a bottle or something and save the fishes and trees..

i used a jd bottle

Test or replace rad cap. Coolant should only come out if rad full, cold and engine warms up expanding coolant. So after it warms up and drive again from cold no more coolant should come out. Recovery tank is nice to have. Rad stays full, no need to ck level constantly.

You guys ever run dishwasher detergent through the radiator to clean it?

Dishwasher soap wont do much for the rust/corrosion that builds up. If you want to to do a heavy flush I would use something like CLR or citric acid. Really though, you shouldnt let it get to the point where its not clean after a water flush in both directions.

A lot of old timers use vinegar to clean out thier system

ive considered doing this, but heard (read) something about the vinegar eating at the lead solder in our copper/bronze radiators?

obviously the longer the exposure the more deterioration. im probably gonna let a gallon of vinegar sit in my rad within the next week

for a day perhaps, im sure all will be good.

Just ask A-Gang for a gallon of citric acid next time youre on the boat... they use it to clean out a lot of the equipment in the machinery spaces like the CO2 scrubbers.
