mtngoat
HI folks, yes it's me once again. Trust me, next time a diff starts growling at me it's coming out pronto. Anyway, when I went in to replace it today I found that the left rear wheel had about 1/8" or less of slop, in and out style when I got it off the ground and prepared to remove the tire. Great, I thought, what now. Axle bearing? When I got the axle out of that side, I find that the bearing seems OK. The bearing itself, smooth and tight seemingly. What is actually moving about is the where the bearing is supposed to be a press fit on the shaft It appears that somehow vibration from the diff got the bearing loose on it's inner face where the press fit to the axle happens, and somehow turned my left rear bearing inner surface into a Datsun power lathe. I suppose it could be the bearing interior which got bigger, but I suspect it's both. the entire bearing's inner race now can tilt and spin a fraction of an inch around the axle shaft like an oversized ring on your finger which won't stay put. The other side looks fine and feels OK. That said, I need at least one axle to get back on the road. Help! thanks Link to comment
MikeRL411
TRW Bearing Set? The compound, not a set of bearings. Cured a rear axle leak on my old 1970 Buick Electra Limited. Link to comment
wayno
Do you think this could have been the issue the whole time, a bad axle bearing, or is the gearset bad also? Link to comment
mtngoat
OMG if you could see the pic I took of the pinion gear in the pumpkin I just pulled...I can't believe what it looks like. Gollum's teeth look better. Link to comment

That's an idea. I may be forced to try it to get back on the road, but I'd rather replace the entire works. Link to comment
ggzilla
I wouldn't use bearing glue ... the bearing shouldn't cause any play. The bearing retainer and shims/spacers are what holds the axle in the housing and it is also a press fit. Maybe the retainer's been vibrated somewhat loose too ... Link to comment

Either the bearing itself has been oversized or the shaft has worn down. The retainer won't budge and I can wiggle the bearing back and forth *sideways* on the shaft, not in and out along it...though it's so loose I can do both! Link to comment
mtngoat
I got a few PMs including one for a single axle which is great, I'm also considering the tacoma offer but I only need the one axle, now with the diff I picked up on Friday and the spare one I was waiting for side gears for, I don't need an entire axle. I'll mull it all over as I finish installing the pumpkin today and then make some decisions. Link to comment
deans510
I have a single axle with the bearing still installed, don't know its condition. If you can get one closer than mine,(94519) the shipping would be better for you. Link to comment
