Engy
I was driving my 710 along and it started to die as I accelerated onto the highway, before it stopped giving power there was a *pop* kind of noise and it stopped running and wouldn't start again, thought it might be gas but I got some into the tank(after a huge pain because the stupid new gas can thing had a little spring that broke so I had to use a small funnel) but after a few tries on starting it wouldn't even try anymore. I had it towed to my autoshop/class so I can look at it with my teacher and maybe find out what the issue may be but I want to get an idea on what it may be, any ideas? My brother pointed out that the battery has died a couple times so it may be the alternator but it may be the gas too. Anyone have this happen to them too? Quote Link to comment
Draker
Is gas getting to the carb? Quote Link to comment
Skib
well for starters making random guess's dont help. if you ran out of gas it takes a while for the pump to pull fuel from the tank sometimes. make sure your battery is charged, try and start it and spray some starting fluid to help get it goin Quote Link to comment
Engy
Yeah I won't be able to do anything until tomorrow but I'll try that, the car was flawless and it said I had a 1/4 of a tank left. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
get a volt meter in shop class!!!!!!!!!!! test out the battery charge it see if runs then measure across battery and see if chargin. if not your running battery dry. if not gas see out pu of fuel pump shoots gas out. also ck if line is cracked goin in to the fuel pump then it will only suck air. Ps be more specific on trouble shooting beside my car died at the end of the road. We dont know if you even has basic mechanics so we dont waist out time explaining a whole lot of nothing. olddatsuns.com has enough basics for you to get by. read it Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Basics You need spark and you need fuel for the motor to start. Look on the front of the carb. There is a glass with a line or a dot where the fuel level should be. If there is gas showing go to spark... Pull a plug wire and stick any spark plug in the end. Lay or hold on a grounded surface like the valve cover and have some one crank the motor over. Look for a bright spark. Then: get a volt meter in shop class!!!!!!!!!!! test out the battery charge it see if runs then measure across battery and see if chargin. if not your running battery dry. Battery charged and motor off, you should read about 12 volts across the battery terminals. Start it if you can... the voltage should now be in the 13.8-14.5 v range if the alternator is charging. racerx
ohm out your coil or take it an auto store they may be able to check it out. yeh, see if are getting gas in carb. then see if you have spark..If I had to guess it's your coil. Similar thing happened to me and it was the coil. Quote Link to comment
racerx
try this...good luck. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/coil-troubleshooting.cfm Quote Link to comment

Checking for spark I have done with a broken off piece of fence wire. Stick it in the plug wire end and hold near the valve cover and crank. YES there is spark: look elsewhere for a problem NO spark. Test the wire coming from the coil. YES there is spark from coil wire: the problem is the rotor, distributor cap or the plug wires. NO spark: Pop the distributor cap off and crank motor.... the points must open and close. NOT opening: Set point gap to 0.022" POINTS working: check for power at the coil positive terminal. YES there is power: Coil may be bad NO power: Jumper 12 volts from battery to ballast resister to get you home. Figure out later in a warm garage.. Quote Link to comment
