521 fuel sender

Recommended Posts

So, I'll spare you all the long story.  I busted one of the connectors on the fuel sender of my 521 (with the evap system).  The wire on the underside of the sender cap that was attached to the busted connector had no slack when it wasn't busted.  I'm not sure how the wire was routed through the assembly.  I need a photo for reference so I can make the repair.

You can see the wire that I'm holding with my screwdriver.  This is the wire that I need to know how to route through the assembly.  Hopefully someone has got one laying around or one that's easily pulled.

Thanks folks!

I believe one end of the resistor is grounded, and the other end is isolated from ground, this is the terminal the yellow wire goes to.  the float moves a slider on the resistor, and forms a variable short to ground, as the float goes up more of the resistor is shorted out.

To test the rest of the fuel gauge system, shorting the black and yellow wires that attach to the tank sender should cause the fuel gauge to go to full.  About 40 ohms, about half tank, and I think 180 ohms is empty.

Damn, you guys!  Even when I post at 12 am I get responses within hours!  I checked out Nissanparts.cc, they've got the sender in their system and I ordered one up.  It was cheap enough so I thought "what the hell".  I just hope I don't get an email soon telling me that it is out of stock and discontinued...

Thanks again you guys.  This place and its users ROCK!

If you can't get your ordered sender, then I can send you a pic of one I have from a 620. Would guess that it's the same.

Get a cheap VOM (volt ohm meter) and measure the resistance (in ohms) from one wire to the other as you raise and lower the float. See Daniel C's good post.

My sliding contact was a bit gunky, so I spray cleaned it with contact spray cleaner.

Update:  Sorry for the delay folks (I hate it when a thread ends unresolved)!  So Nissanparts.cc took a week to tell me that they can't get my sender....  ...a week   Oh well, its to be expected, 'you pick a car like the one we all did.  They're old and crusty and not every gauge works but hey, that's part of the allure, am I right or am I right or am I right? Right?

To tell truth, I've been doing many other fun things like cleaning EVERYTHING in the engine bay.  Who knows if anyone is gonna see this response?  Anyhow, I shall be more attentive with my updates from here on.

dotdat, expect a PM about those pics in 3...2...1...
