jesusno2
If so anytips on why my furnace only really heats my living room well? The furnace intake is right in the start of the hallway. (Single story home) soon as you walk past the intake, the temp drops dramatically. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are cold, and barley any air is coming up through the vents. Any thoughts? converted_to_datsun
I do a little hvac. If your house is a little older the vents could be leaking or comming apart. They usually hook the flex to the vents with duct tape and it breaks down over time. Also and kinks or collapsed ducts would be a problem. Most likely your ducts are leaky tho. You can crawl under there and use special duct tape to reseal the vents Quote Link to comment
oldskoolvws
You need to check for leaks or restrictions in your ducting to the other rooms first. Installed dampers are not restrictions. If those check out fine, then you need to "BALANCE" the system. Essentially you need enough back pressure to push the heat to the other registers in the home. This is normally done with dampers or registers. Kind of that path of least resistance thing. If you have dampers, this does not apply. A simple way to sorta balance your home is to manipulate all registers closed. Then slightly open the closest to the furnace. Open the next and next and next slightly more than the last. Rooms requiring more heat should open more, less heat closed more. Adjust as necessary. EDIT: The test above is with the furnace on of course! Quote Link to comment
kelowg
Careful tho, that can cause system to overheat. Also ck sizing of ducts. Has it alwys had this problem? Or something new? Quote Link to comment
jesusno2
It's been this way since i bought this house, going on about 4 years now. My AC is does the same crap, where the back of the house stays warmer than the rest during the summer time. I've tried to "balance the system" as they say with the dampers, but it hasn't changed any, just chilled the living/dining room area. Quote Link to comment
Farmer
Is it NG or Heatpump? Is the furnace in the Garage? How old is the house? If its a heatpump, closing down some registers wont over heat the system. The air will just flow to the next least resistant path. Definitely an air flow problem, probably bad duct design. They may have not reduced the main trunk, that causing low cfm/fpm, to the farther duct runs. Crawl under the house and see if there is any crushed ducts or ones that have fallen off. Little critters LOVES those things. Larry Quote Link to comment
ripetomatoes
If your duct work is under the house, check for places where it has been torn open by animals nesting under your house. They like to get inside there and sleep, because its warm. You might also have butterfly dampers, wich restrict airflow to certain portions of the house (this will be in hard sheetmetal ductwork, not in flex duct) Also, how old is your furnace? if you can get a model number, that would be great. Farmer
You dont see much metal ducts here in Oregon. Old timers used to use alot of Fiber round ducts with metal fittings. And alot of cheap duct tape. I know of only two companies around my parts, use dampers to regulate the air flow. And I'm not one of them. If you design/size the ducts correctly, you wont have to worry to much about dampering down runs. Hope its something simple. Larry Quote Link to comment
jesusno2
It a NG furnace in the garage, the ac pump is a seperate system. I have not gone under the house its pretty wet down their this time of the year. Now come to think of it i havent heard my sump pump come on in a while   :crying: Quote Link to comment
ripetomatoes
i'd either call someone to check it out, or check it out yourself. there can be a lot of nasty stuff floating around in your crawlspace if you have animals living under your house. (if yo do go under, gloves and a respirator, maybe a big maglite to swing at Raccoons with.... it's what i use) Also inspect the hard duct that connects soft duct (if it's soft duct) to your vents, as previously posted, they can fall apart if they are older. And, if you can't tell... i do HVAC with my dad... lol Quote Link to comment

I cold buy enough beer to make me forget... everthin" My money is on a duct that is disconnected, has leaks, is flooded full of mud, or has been converted to skunk or coon condos.
