flatcat19
You could find a 720 5 speed and swap the Bell housing from a 620s 4 speed Bell housing to that. A little more work. The info on how to can be found here on Ratsun. Quote Link to comment
fritzdixxon
Were there not also some l20b 720s? The first year or 2 may have the same 5spd as the 620. Currently he has an auto, so sourcing a 720 and a fourspeed to pull the front section from is now double the price and work, if the auto case could be used Thad be great but...... MicroMachinery
The '80 had the l20b. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
so id have to do tunnel work if i get a 620 5 speed then? I would doubt that you need to massage the tunnel. I put a zx 5 speed in my short 4 speed 710... no problem. Get an A10 automatic driveshaft and 'way you go. Were there not also some l20b 720s? The first year or 2 may have the same 5spd as the 620. Currently he has an auto, so sourcing a 720 and a fourspeed to pull the front section from is now double the price and work, if the auto case could be used Thad be great but...... There were three internal gear ratios on the FS5W71 B 5 speeds W=Wide 1st... 3.592 2nd.. 2.246 3rd.. 1.308 4th... 1.000 5th... 0.864 M=Mid 1st.... 3.321 2nd.. 2.071 3rd... 1.308 4th... 1.000 5th... 0.883 C=Close 1st.... 3.062 2nd.. 1.858 3rd... 1.308 4th... 1.000 5th...0.773 or 0.745 L series FS5W71B 5 speeds '77-'78 620......... M SD22 and SD25 series diesels '80-'86 720............ W 4x4 5 speeds aren't much use as they have no speedometer drive. There were no FS5W71B 5 speeds before '77 and after '86.5 All FS5W71B 5 speeds were 31.5" long except some models of the 720 truck which were 26.5". About '85 all 71B switched to a larger 62mm counter shaft bearing from the old 56mm. If swapping an earlier 56mm front case on, you will need to replace the 62mm with a 56mm bearing so it fits. OR.... machine the case to take the stronger improved 62mm bearing. About '85 some 71B used a 16mm 1st/2nd shift rod instead of the older 14mm one. just drill the L series front case out so it fits. Around '80 some 71B shifters changed and a shorter throw is possible. All 71B after '80 are fitted with a reverse check sleeve. This ingenious little addition makes it impossible to down shift from 5th into reverse by mistake. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
So he has to buy all of those trannys ?? That seems like it would be pretty expensive. Count down to FAT510s new, new parts wagon,,,, T-minus 8 days. bitch Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
So he has to buy all of those trannys ?? That seems like it would be pretty expensive. Look under the L series column. This lists all transmissions that are L series bolt pattern and will bolt to any L series engine. All the others are the same transmissions but for the front case bolt pattern. Swap an L series front case on and it becomes L series compatible. Quote Link to comment

So far my 1 4spd has become 2 but every car I've seen being parted out has had 1, except the one that had a 5spd which I got so added to my auto I got 4 all together. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
At one point I had 4 71b 4 speeds. I wasn't smart enough then to remove the Bell housing and save it. Quote Link to comment

flatcat19
Pedal box is the hardest. Trans should b easy. Post up a legitimate offer for a 5 speed plus the shipping and you'll have a 5 speed in no time. Quote Link to comment
