wayno
First of all, you do not want to separate the column from the steering gear/box, you take the column/box out together.Take all the tierods off the pitman arm, remove the steering wheel and turn signal assembly, unbolt from dash, and then remove the bolts holding the steering gear from the frame, then lift the gear over the radiator core support and pull it out from the front of the truck. Yes there is, the shaft with the gear on the end. Mklotz did a write up on the steering gear, and shortening the steering column, but I have looked and cannot find it. I have not heard any good stories about someone removing the column from the gear and putting it back together successfully except Mike, although I am sure others have been successful.
