To Bore or Not To Bore LZ20E

Recommended Posts

Yes this is not a DD engine it will run between 4500-7500 rpm's Still trying to figure out what cam to go with, it will be running a 38-38 webber a87 Closed chamber head with bigger z valves and ported to 1.5 intake ports. We might shave it down and shim the cam towers to make the combustion cc's smaller. I have decided to just leave the short block alone till the end of the season(unless it blows or starts smoking) then bore it to 89mm.

Driven's answer is very good, except this part:

taking a bone stock L20b in a '79 620 and simply increasing bore size will yield almost no measurable performance gain.
Sure it will. Going 3 mm overbore will make a lot more power. You might be thinking of a typical clean-up overbore -- going 0.5 over will yield almost no measurable performance gain. Overbore adds up much faster than stroking the crank or increasing compression. For racing, do everything. For the street, do your best bangs for bucks.
