How to identify a differential?

Hey how's it going, I got a few differentials for free from a transaction. They all have different tags such as 213, 214, 140, and etc. How do I know which has a lsd? And etc.

Assume the diffs are out of the vehicles??? Turn the wheel while someone holds the other. If the driveshaft flange turns but not the other side it's an open diff. If both wheels turn but the same direction then LSD. Very unlikely you'll find an LSD diff.

If you have the complete rear axle assembly you can do like Mike says.

 

Diff? You mean the 3rd-member (pumpkin)? Just look at it, if you can't see the spider gears, it's an LSD:

Thanks for the help guys, some have axles, and some dont. As for identification I'm also wondering how do I know if it's a r160 r200 and etc. I'm going to open then all up and clean it but just curious to how to identify the diff.

if someone wouldnt mind, perhaps they could post a list of which datsuns (if any?) came stock with or had the option of lsd?

R160 vs R180 -- just measure the diameter of the Ring Gear (160mm vs 180mm)
