d510addict
I recently installed a new Redline Weber 32/36 and it was working pretty well although it would cause my car to start backfiring like a mofo at any slight weather change. Last night I gunned it a bit while on the way home from work and bam as soon as I came to an idle it died. Now it will not idle and will only run with choke out and even then it runs horribly with me having to give it gas constantly. I checked the mixture skrew its about 2 turns out, the idle skrew seems to be fine and the only notable linkage issue was the nut that holds my throttle butterfly onto the carb shaft was missing idk how but it was. Replaced the nut and added some loctite on there. Still no change. I really need a way to get to work (have to ride my bike today but its gonna be tough), So any thoughts on the issue? What are some things I should check? Quote Link to comment
Zeusimo
What Motor Is This? My Truck Use To Do That On The Freeways Not Sure Why Not Sure Why It Doesn't Do That Any More When I Got My Weber I Had To Run It Almost 5 Turns Out No Power And Too Damn Richh Rejetted And Has Lasted 6K So Far Maybe Clean It? Check For Vacc Leak.. If Not Ill Trade My Hitachi On The 610 :D Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Usually when I get major backfiring because of weather it turns out to be... ... Ignition. Ditching the wobbly old points distributor helped, but it came back. Condensation in the cap was the culprit there. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
What Datsunaholic said also I notice if one overtighten the rear nut holding the linkage can cause a bind. Try loosen the nut and see if your idle comes back Time motor and adjust carb. wobbly points as above can also be the issue. My dizzy condensated a few weeks ago also(it happens) Condensor??????highly unlikely but a last ditch effort Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Did you install a new fuel filter with the carb? Quote Link to comment
d510addict
Its an L20b with an EI dizzy, it was running fine for the longest time and ran very very well with the weber for about a month. No I did not replace the inline fuel filter but thats first on my list when i can get a ride tomorrow, It has been bone dry and this issue was very very sudden so I dont think its condensation. It was in time and adjustment was really close then bam very sudden issues. Makes me think I blew a gasket in the carb or sucked some debree into a jet (very possible since there is junk in the fuel filter). This isnt a tight nut issue as the nut that was on there fell off some where and it was still running like crap. When I put a new one on, it wasnt too tight and everything moved easily. Thanks for the help guys!! Quote Link to comment

Thanks for the help guys!! First i'd check for vacuum leaks,Get a couple cans of carb cleaner and get the motor running, spray the carb cleaner (gently You dont need to coat it) around the gaskets,If it idles better where you sprayed it Theres a leak,If no change i would take the carb off and pop the top off and clean it with carb cleaner, spray All the ports and trew the jets both ways put back together and it should run fine. d510addict
It wont idle, it will just die unless i have choke out and foot on gas . Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Then forcing a rich condition indicates it's running lean. Primary (main) jet clogged or huge vacuum leak. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
nice piccy of a weber 32/36! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Than-kew! No way it's mine but i see a picture, i grab a picture. You never know when someone needs an example. I started this with Datsun transmissions and now have about 700 transmission/driveshaft related pictures. Could whittle them down to 500 I would imagine. Quote Link to comment
Dawa
all the problems with my (weber) carb stemmed back to a rusty gas tank! poor idle, high idle, backfires, dying, dying going up hills.... hows your fuel filter looking? Quote Link to comment
d510addict
Fuel filter was dirty as hell and letting stuff through, and I had a massive Massive vacuum leak. The fix was new fuel filter cleaned carb and tightened down adapters and used loctight. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There ya go. You are now a weber expert. Quote Link to comment
d510addict
lol, it took forever. Quote Link to comment
Dawa
There ya go. You are now a weber expert. thats how i felt after HAVING to disassemble and clean mine! theyre so simple but it's my first carb'd car so i wasnt familiar with it in the beginning.... also, i recommend you get one of these as a 'pre' filter. the filter is finer and catches stuff our regular filters cant, and you cant disassemble, clean, and reassemble it in a couple minutes! about $10 at any autoparts store. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
theres plastic in line ones that are see thru. I use 2 myself on the trucks Quote Link to comment
Dawa
@ first i had used the plastic inline one but it's still a paper catridge that wouldnt catch as much stuff as this one, plus this one you can take a part, clean and reinstall. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
I bought one of those $10 glass ones but it leaked no matter what I did. Took it off and just running the stock filter, no problems since. Quote Link to comment
Dawa
yeah i gotta say that i didnt have high expectations when i installed mine and everytime i check it (everday or more) im expecting it to be leaking but its been holding up! 510addict, if you arent already, you should definitely keep (all the tools required to disassmble your carb) in your vehicle, as well as at least a hall full can of carb cleaner. in case you have to do some roadside repair, like ive had to... a couple times. ggzilla
I once rebuilt my carburetor at a rest stop. At night. In the dark. With only a reversible screwdriver. Now I know that the usually problems can be fixed by draining the fuel bowl, instead of removing the carburetor top. Quote Link to comment
Dawa
oh that reminds me of one thing i forgot to add to the list of shit to have with you, a flashlight! luckily the week before i had found a 'mini mag' for $10, including batteries & 2 extra bulbs. gotta ♥ walmart. Quote Link to comment
