ofg
Hello. I am currently working on a 199 210, just mild restoration and getting it back into good running shape. However, I got a line on a fairly clean 710 wagon, and am considering a swap for it. What i want to do is a NON TURBO SR20 from jdm car. So, what is the correct transmission for a rwd car? Would i just get a trans from 240sx? What about older units like from 200sx or even older like from l20 powered cars? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
bonvo
get the 5 speed that comes with imported sr20s? Quote Link to comment
INDY510
. he's talking about the Front wheel drive "JDM yo" SR20VE ......... . it will not work easily ....... buy a RWD motor it'd be alot cheaper in the end Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I believe the KA FS5W71C fits them. S13/S14 240sx or D-21 Hardbody The older S110 200sx will fit as will the Z series motor 720 truck 5 speeds, but these are FS5W71B and really not near strong enough for an SR let alone an SR turbo. ggzilla
SR20 was one of the most common JDM engines. They put it in everything excepts trucks. In the USDM, only came in FWD Nissans. Quote Link to comment
Hardwyre
If you can get the whole drive train from a 240sx, that would probably be easier since most of the SR20s in the US are FWD and thus don't mount easily longitudinally because of the location of the distributor. ggzilla
I do not know. Most everybody gets the SR20 with the 5-speed (or 6-speed) as a matched set from Japan importers. Quote Link to comment

Can you take two pictures of each bell housing looking directly down into each one from straight above at the same height from the lip? I tried to over lay the two, but they're about 180 degrees apart because the camera is in the middle of the two. Quote Link to comment

Not his pic, found on a forum, in the thread it is about swapping the SR bell housing to the KA Tranny... http://forums.nicoclub.com/diy-swapping-sr-bell-housing-to-ka-transmission-t278158.html Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Yep, exactly right. The information is pretty sketchy. Quote Link to comment
Hardwyre
This guy makes a good point, a point that has been ignored or forgotten by a few people who've swapped the bell housings, or just opened up their trannys to check stuff: MAKE DAMN SURE ALL THE SELECTOR ARMS ARE IN NEUTRAL BEFORE RE-ASSEMBLING THE TRANSMISSION!!!! Apparently a number of people miss the fact they bumped one of the gear selector forks, get their transmissions installed back into their cars, only to find they can't shift gears. Big, big, BIG oops. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muRXOXWFh4U&feature=player_embedded Quote Link to comment
bonvo
long story short ka bellhousing is different from sr get them as a matched set from an importer problem solved Quote Link to comment
Fearedi Z31
Over at z31performance.com a lot of talk of the 71c tranny swapping capabilities has been debated. Same thing goes here. The bell housing is different for our Zs, but the gear cluster is the same. If you wanted, you could pick up a N/A 300zx(84-89) 71c tranny and just swap the bell housing to what you want. There you go. Another option for ya. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Yep, exactly right. The information is pretty sketchy. Agreed. As I understood it they were 'the same'. Probably meant same transmission, FS5W71C, not interchangeable. This would mean the transmission has come from Japan. Quote Link to comment
ofg
O/K, looks like it may be doable. I found some sort of bell housing adapter to mate a KA (240sx??) trans to an sr20 engine. Also, many of the sr20 clips on ebay do come with the trans, but they also come with everything else. Not looking to swap a USDM sr20,, I know theyre fwd. I had a 91 ser back when they were new. Best little car ever. Not looking to do the turbo either. Too much hassle. There were actually a few nissan silvia clips with NA sr20 motors in them. Another option I would HIGHLY consider is a turbo engine out of late model (1989?) 200sx se. Should be a simplified set up,, I guess an early 300z v6 swap is about as plausible for that matter...I have to look at the wagon first,, then see what can be done. Quote Link to comment

Didn't you read all the info every one posted? you don't need a adapter for a ka trans you just swap bell housings. z31 300zx 240 sx sr20de rwd and sr20det rwd ca18det trans mission can all be swapped on to a sr20det bell housing. you dont have to buy a clip you can just buy a engine set on e bay. bonvo
or when you buy the sr get it with a transmission i have yet to see one from an importer without a trans Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
can all be swapped on to a sr20det bell housing It is actually the front half of the transmission that you can swap (what Nissan calls the "Front Case"). There is no seperate removable "bell housing". Quote Link to comment
ofg
After more searching it seems most likely to spend 3800 or more on a front clip that includes the trans. It could be real costly! Perhaps a stock 240sx setup would be better. Or mabey even just a hopped up l20. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Why would you want a front clip? For the front suspension? Most guys get a engine+transmission+wiring as a package. Quote Link to comment
