Master-O-Turbonics
So I am looking to make an A/C system for my 521 truck before the heat of the Georgia summer hits hard. The truck is SD22 powered so there isn't much as far as availability for A/C parts. From what I found out, all of the pulleys are different than the 1 rib non-A/C pulleys, including alternator and main pulley... my NON-A/C 5 speed SD22 engine So I am looking into 12 volt and alternative systems for A/C. Here are a few different types that I have found: Ice chest based... basically runs cold water from an insulated ice chest to an interior fan system. This home built unit has an insulated PVC container and a windshield washer motor to move the water. A thermador type evaporative car cooler.. The main issue with using an evaporative cooler is that it does not work well in a humid climate, and that is mainly what we have here in Georgia so maybe there is an alternative... Possibly taking the above technology to remotely mount an ice chest and have a housing like a thermador for the vintage looks and to move air, but no internal parts other than a small heater core/ radiator Any other ideas? Budget is $100 for this project. Going on my little datto truck... Quote Link to comment
nismo dr
I love the thermodor look, there was a 521 at canby with one and it looked awesome on the datto. But it might look funny on a jacked up 4x4. edit: found the oic's Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
I wish I would have thought about a Thermador before I built my AC system for my wagon. The AC is nice, however.. just less stylin'. I would imagine that AC is far more effective for removing BTUs from my cab than a swamp cooler would be. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
why not just change your 3 pulleys to the AC type, then fit an AC system? Quote Link to comment
Jester
If all you want is something that functions for slow trail crawling, just piece together the required goods that will fit in the tight spots of your 521. Random A/C parts at the wreckers are cheap. Have you thought about a system from a 720? Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
In Seattle, i've never seen a swap cooler except at a show. We use real A/C here, but don't need it very often. Just off and on during the summer. Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Must be cooler in your part of the state? In Seattle it gets over 90 every summer. Since some SD22 came with A/C, what is the problem of getting the pulleys and swapping it over? Quote Link to comment
Master-O-Turbonics
Must be cooler in your part of the state? In Seattle it gets over 90 every summer. Since some SD22 came with A/C, what is the problem of getting the pulleys and swapping it over? SD22's are few and far between..... and then to get one with A/C... If I find SD22 A/C stuff I'll snatch it up but I don't want to spend a lot of time/effort making a custom A/C system. "swapping it over" is not as simple as doing an L series pully set... The main pulley has the timing cogs for the fuel injection pump and I really don't want to have to deal with resetting the fuel timing just to change pulleys... its a pretty big hassle just to change a pulley. This is an LD28 main pulley as example of the cogs. Quote Link to comment
