I found my new 620, now the project begins

Well I found my new project truck. After a long long search and many disappointments I brought the new girl home! I found the truck on Craigslist about 5 hours from my home. After a long conversation with the owner it was apparent that he was more concerned with his truck going to a good home than he was with the money. He restored/built this truck in 1990 and drove it all over the country. 2 years ago he had some health problems and was unable to drive, the truck sat unused. I made the trip down south on Friday. I was not disappointed when I arrived at the house. The truck was everything the ad said and then some. I had to go by a battery just to start her up because after 2 years, the old one was dry as bone. After a quick trip to Wally World I returned with the new voltage and wouldn't you know it, she started up with almost no effort. I gladly handed over my $1000 dollars for the truck and away we went. The long journey home was going great for the first 4 hours until I was getting off at the exit on 75 to make the final 1 hour leg of the ride and uh oh .... smoke is pouring out of the back. I was loosing power so I thought the best thing was to push for the truck stop 2 hundred yards up the road. As I turned into the truck stop the motor seized up. We coasted into the first parking space I could find. Note to self, if you think you hear lifters starting to float on you, don't convince yourself that its not even if you do have good oil pressure. I left the truck be and called the tow truck guy in the morning . 40 miles and $175 more dollars later we arrived in my yard with the new project truck. It will be such a great platform to start from as there is almost no rust on the body what so ever. Now the topper, wheels , OEM Datsun fender flares and just about everything will go but for now, I kind of like my time capsule. It takes you back to a day when Mini Truckin was simpler. It will be a while before we actually get started on the tear down so for now I am just going to fix the motor, pop a Faith No More cassette into the Jensen tape deck and go cruising for a while.

Another nice, vintage, surviving truck going to be torn apart. :(

Doc its not like its a true survivor. Its a 1990 build and although kinda cool because I had a mini truck back then, its not like an unmolested 76 or even a pre 1980 build. The truck I tried to buy before this was a true survivor 620 with 84,000 easy miles on it. Everything was original and had I gotten that one it would have stayed stock. I understand the thought and agree in keeping history alive but this thing is far from that.

Thanks and when it comes to finds, I couldn't be happier. The plan is to fix the motor and drive the truck almost as is till the end of the year. Then it gets pulled off the road for a complete, frame up rebuild.

Looks great, if u eva wanna get rid of that steering wheel I'm your guy lol

Cool, I will be shedding a lot of these parts in the near future. I won't be doing the tear down till later this year but some of these parts will be going long before that

My build of Funtana was only done 8 years ago. I went to great pains to build a period correct recreation of what would have been a high-end Fontana styled show truck in 1975. It is true, as with Your purchase, that both trucks are late builds and not true historic survivors. I use the word survivor, though, as both of these trucks represent a period in time that mini truckin' builds had all of the accessories that both trucks have. I would be horribly offended and upset if I found that after great discussion about any of My trucks "going to a good home" the new owner disassenbled and cast off historic parts and pieces. My thought is why not just find a nice truck to start with and build it in the way You actually want Yours to be? Giving a truck a "good home" to Me implies that You were happy with the way the truck was when purchased and that a "promise" is given that You will continue to preserve it as the builder handed it over. It is for this reason that I made My comment and also that I will be very cautious and reluctant to sell any of My trucks to anybody that will set out to change them in any way. Jus' sayin.

you say your going to redo it, what do you have in mind? it looks like a runer driver the way it sits....Good lookin truck. ...

oh I agree which is why I am going to drive it as is until maybe December. Of course got get the motor work done before that can happen. Then when I do pull it off the road much will go back to a stock appearance but the actual truck will be nothing but performance.underneath. I have the rest of the year to plan it out though. Until then I will enjoy just cruising for a while
