screamer510
I would think only motor and trans mounts for the L16 and 4 speed, but cutting of firewall and trans tunnel for L28 and 5 speed. Where is the engine for the truck now? Quote Link to comment
dubber
Oops I didn't ask the right question. I meant will the l28 tranny bolt to my l16. But my friend does have an L28 with tranny I could get. I was thinking about the swap. I saw a build on here. Im not sure on how much fabrication was involved though. The motor is in my truck now. rpowell25
Yes, the L28 trans will bolt to the L16. Use all of the clutch parts from your L16 especially the TO bearing collar. Not sure on drive line or shifter hole mods you will have to make. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
L16 motor 4spd, L28 5spd wil it work in my '73 620? Let me know what i will need if it will work. i tried searching. thanks! Your '73 four speed is 26" long. The L28 five speed is 31.5" long. So no, it won't fit, but it can be made to fit by shortening your driveshaft, or get a driveshaft from a '74 through '79 truck. It's two piece like yours but you only need the shorter front half. While there get the transmission mount too just in case.. Quote Link to comment
dubber
Any heads up on the shifter hole? Is there going to be much of a difference? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
The hole in the floor is the same, but the cover plate is different since the shifter is moved back 5 1/2". Quote Link to comment
dubber
which clutch do i use? the L28 or the L16? Also trying to source a '79 drive shaft if anyone has any ideas on that. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Clutch size does not matter to a transmission but the release collar does. You must keep and use the release bearing collar that is on the 4 speed now. Put a new bearing on it and clip to the 5 speed clutch arm and you're ready to go. Any '74-'79 620 front driveshaft should work. They are two piece and you only need the front half. Quote Link to comment

I assume this is a worth while project? I don't want to do it if the gains are minimal, the 4 speed works perfectly. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
The clutch has to match the flywheel. Finding a flywheel to fit both larger L28 clutch and the L16 flywheel bolt pattern is fairly difficult (only used on 1974 trucks with the original factory L18). The L16 clutch will work fine as long as you follow the advice above. Quote Link to comment
Zfighter76
so if i have a factory l18 4 speed 620 i can bolt the l28 flywheel to the l18? the last post sounded like the 1974 l18 crank has a 6 bolt flywheel. Quote Link to comment
DanielC
I have a long shaft five speed in a 521. Here is a picture of the plate that covers the hole, that the shifter goes through. Most L-16, and L-18 crankshafts are five bolt flywheel crankshafts. L-20, and the six cylinder L engines have a six bolt crankshaft, and flywheel. But there are a few six bolt L-18 engines, imported as JDM engines, none were stock in vehicles sold in the USA. One option, if you want a stronger clutch is to get a 2000 roadster pressure plate. It bolts on a L-16 200 MM flywheel, but has almost twice the spring pressure. Your left leg will get tired, or stronger. On my five speed swap, I got the front half of the original 521 drive line shortened, and put the proper yoke to fit into the five speed. Driveshaft yoke The transmission mount was shortened, and I used a 260Z speedometer cable. Transmission mount Quote Link to comment
