Laecaon
This thread is just fun. So much going on. Even if its something I would never do, at least its done well and with a purpose. Keep up with the work, one day it will drive. Quote Link to comment
twistedimages
A bunch of crap showed up today. Here is the pass through bearing for the steering column, I'm so glad I decided to order this. All installed. Just need to dial in the firewall bearing, and the steering is on point. That bearing you got- does it fit the smaller splined section of your column or the larger outer diameter? I ended up making my own by opening up the ID of a Go Kart axle bearing... would have been nice to save all that hassle! As for your steering wheel adapter, I MAY end up copying you on that one! Love the "race car" column, but it would be nice to put the stock wood wheel back on every now and then. Build is looking great- keep working and posting! 1 Quote Link to comment

Love the "race car" column, but it would be nice to put the stock wood wheel back on every now and then. Build is looking great- keep working and posting! It's a machine fit to the lower column, I think the bearing was about $25.00. I love my 240 wheel. I've had it for so long. It's such a classic wheel for these cars and has a really nice dish. I've thought about getting some brooks leather bar tape, and wrapping it up. Thanks for the kind words. Tack welded the lower brackets on, and the casings into the himes joint sleeve. Starting to kind of look like suspension of some weird kind. Here's my custom cooling contraption I used to weld up the shocks. Weld for 10-12 seconds. Wrap in wet t-shirt, place under cooling box. Made the whole thing move slightly faster. Shocks fully welded, top hats on, looking pretty weird! Here's my layout for the top mounts. The plan is to fully compress the bags. Put the car on it's nuts, and build the mounts around that. I really need to invest into a proper drill press. Pretty happy with the outcome however... using a benchtop press I bought 5 years ago and harbour freight step bits. I had two squares cut to nearly identical size. Lined them up the best i could and welded them together. Then, using a scribe I made a bunch of centerline reference marks to line up all of the mounting holes on the top hats. Mounts on, Just need to bend up some tubing to tie it into the frame! Where's my CNC? :( 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoney
Solid progress in such a short period!! Quote Link to comment
Filthy_
Made my goal of getting this finished by the end of the weekend. was a royal pain in the asshole, but I got everything close to ready and then my bud Erik came and helped me get everything tacked up. I can't lie, I wanted to tig weld the entire thing, but in order to get the suspension angles to do the right thing, there were some gaps more suited for the mud gun. basically a roller now boys! FUCK YEAH! 5 Quote Link to comment
Filthy_
Took her off of the dollies to get an actual Idea of how she's looking. I'm unsure why, but now that the rear suspension is in, the car seems smaller, and lower... Got that lil' bastard firewall bearing mounted into a plate. I drilled it so it could be bolted to the firewall, but then said fuck it and just welded it in. aww yea. The other fancy sweet MFG. heims came in the mail, so now the steering column is 100%. Still contemplating throwing in a bar between the left front leg and the new steering column brace to get rid of any and all flex, but that can wait. http://i699.photobucket.com/albums/vv360/Loveletter87/th_063D2F2A-57D3-45FA-BE6D-4F3797CA97AC_zpstwpgqihx.mp4 Can't embed videos, but if you click on this it's a shitty video of the car articulating. I went to the hardware and bought some shit to T in a shrader valve so I could lift it up with my shop air. Works like a dream! Wilwood pedal box has been ordered, but on back order for "3 weeks" which probably means 3 years. Also put a vibrant order together for all of the exhaust parts. 2 u-j bends, a gigantic muffler, and 3 v-bands. Also ordered stainless hangers, really excited to build the pipe for this hog. Till next time  . 2 Quote Link to comment
Filthy_
I just went back and read over this build thread... I can't believe it's been 5 years, and I can't believe how naive I was. thanks Ratsun, haha. 2 Quote Link to comment
r0p0doe
Are you going to seal off the rear doors and make it into a 2dr? Quote Link to comment
WAGON JON
EPIC build! Just blows me away with all the welding and new rear end! Just plain awesome! 1 Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
Only do that if you put 2dr doors on it. Which would probably help with how far back your seat is. 1 Quote Link to comment

Filthy_
Picked up all of this nonsense 2 days ago. Went straight for the business and started fucking shit up. This was most of the progress I made in the first night. I've never made a fancy exhaust before, especially out of stainless, so I did my best to not waste anything. Pretty sexy muff from motovicity, It's straight through, but extremely heavy and well made. I'm really hoping it takes some of the bark out of this little guy. Better shot of where I ended up punching through the firewall. Originally I wanted to go up towards the hole for the wiper motor. The angle seemed a bit heavy, and If I went at a slight downward, I could also do a slight "inward" and make the first 90 degree bend in the downpipe much less extreme... for flow or whatever. Shot through cowl holes. Got a bag of fancy silicon hoses! Moved downstream to the muffler. Another cowl shot. Definitely going to wrap the fuck out of everything except that blinged out muffler. I hope you can look down in there and see it. Tried my hand at some back purged tig welding. Completely unnecessary for this application, but I had never tried it. All of the v-bands. Finished product. My first full stainless, full tig welded exhaust, very excited. Now I just need to figure out my hanger situation (which I have), and grind out a really cool fish mouth or something on the tip! I have some stainless sheet metal to make a shroud on the bottom of the fender where it exits for extra style points, rivets and shit. Good night! 4 Quote Link to comment
The Engine Room
Do this: Go to the dollar store and get a small, cheap stainless steel dog bowl and use it as the shroud. 1 Quote Link to comment

Filthy_
Got back in business with my buddy card stock. Blasted the hole, worked out pretty nice! Eyeing up the angle I wanted. Sliced it down and started planning out a pass through. Got some stainless from my buddy. Decided to try my hand at some sheet metal work. I have nothing but respect for people who are masters at this stuff. Definitely looking forward to learning more. I decided to make the bottom part permanent, and make the piece above the dashbar removable so I could get the Exhaust out if need be. Kind of what it was looking like about after a handful of hours. At about this time I had been working on the 3rd piece and ended up cutting it out and getting drunk out of frustration. Sat outside and had a few beers and some dinner and came back to try again. This is about where I am now, I have one more small piece to patch in on the underside near the pedals. Just got my air tank, So hopefully I won't need to order anything to get that shit all installed... Gonna swing by the store tomorrow and pick up an optima... maybe run some wires here soon. Still need to figure out a floor for the rear of the car. After making this firewall I'm less than excited about that. 4 Quote Link to comment
Stoney
Some form of reflective insulation on the inside of those panels, along with ceramic coating the whole exhaust both inside and outside should help keep cabin temps down a bit, but I still think it will make it a warm area to be. The Engine Room
That cutout template was pretty much dead nuts. The ability to problem solve things like that is what separates the men from the boys. 1 Quote Link to comment

Filthy_
Got my crazy expensive pedals...and they don't fit. decided that I could probably make them work. Started by cutting down the plungers for the MC's. Doing this brought the pedals in a whopping inch or so, clearly not even close to enough. My next idea was to cut some pie cuts into the back of the pedal, and bend the angle into them that was required to put them at a reasonable position for driving. The clutch pedal also needed some notching for the swivel that attaches the plunger to the MC. Here they are after the first cut I did, I ended up putting more angle on them than in this photo. But you can sort of see how they look with the Chassis of the box up at that angle. Only the clutch pedal has been fucked with in that picture. Some welds on the brake pedal. It worked out nicely, I just had to notch them and leave the front intact. Then I tried my best to get after it with a file to make them somewhat nice looking, uniform and such. Threw them in the shower for some paint. Bam, double custom Mcguyver pedal box. I just need to get my 3rd MC, (in the mail) So I can adjust them all to be at the same distance. The throttle just has a stop screw on the front to thats the least of my worries. I just ordered some checkerboard griptape to replace the wilwood pieces I scrapped. Also have all of this ready to go on. Injectors, fuel rail, plenum spacer, nismo fpr. hopefully update soon, planning on taking the car to a friends shop next month for FMIC piping. 3 Quote Link to comment
