Distribuor Installation

Assume the drive gear is out of the engine. Before you re-install it, decide what orientation you want the spark plug wires on the distributor cap. My preference is with #1 plug wire at 4:00 o'clock (as viewed standing by the right fender). This puts less strain on #1 wire. Remove the EI distributor cap and rotate the rotor so it points to 4:00 o'clock (dizzy held with the fixing plate extension facing you). See what offset direction is on the drive tang on the lower end of the distributor (you'll have to look up in the hole). Then you 'll know what direction to have the offset slot in the top of the drive gear when you re-install it, with #1 piston at 0 TDC between compression and power strokes. Verify this position by making sure both valves on #1 cylinder are closed.
