datzenmike
A cold setting assumes it will work when warm and metal has expanded. The best method is to set hot. Intake 0.010" Exhaust 0.012" Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Yes, if you do it cold, you need to set a tighter gap. When the metal heats up to normal operating temp, the gap will get bigger. But because "cold" varies depending on where you are, whereas hot is a relatively fixed operating temp, set it hot. racerx
keep in mind that when you do adjust hot, you have to be fast or else the motor will get...also have the open end 14 mm wrench shave off (grind it) so that it fits better, you will need a 17 mmm and 14 mm, sure its the same with L16-L18, as far as the nuts are concerned. Laecaon
I always burn myself when I do it hot. And I cant do it fast enough. So I just do it cold so I know all the valves get the same adjustment. Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Cold is about 65 degrees. If you do it at 20 degrees all bets are off. COLD VALVE ADJUSTMENT L-series Intake: .008 inch (.20 mm) Exhaust:.010 inch (.25 mm) Gap them tight (as per spec) since they will loosen up as the engine goes fully warm. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Also write down the Exaust/Intake sequence...I think EIIEEIIE on a piece of paper and as you go along adjusting the valves check off the ones you did and alse note what the gap was before adjusting. I just adjusted my valves last night and should have noted gap before adjustment . I also read in one of my old Datsun books to adjust "hot", and the other thing that helps is shaving down the 14" open end wrench so that it is easier to get in, did this by sandgrinding it. Lastly, make sure you tighthen the locknut, 17", real good. Adjusted mines several years ago and forgot to tighthen one of them and after a a mile or so engine sounded like a diesel, loose nut. Good luck. Quote Link to comment
