banzai510(hainz)
Was working on a 520 single headlamp today. I think its a 520. 1966 I believe with J motor. Do these have a ballast resisitor? If not then what Ohm is the coil?I dont see a HOT START wire in the harness. There was a MSD Blaster coil in there but replaced with a stock 521 point 1.6 ohm coil but assume this rig has a resisitve wire or needs a higher coil coil. I dont see a ballast resisitor in the 520 wire diagram. That guys that owns this I for got your name? was it Brian? Peters friend WE GOT IT RUNNING BUT COIL IS WRONG i BELIEVE ITS GETTING HOT Quote Link to comment
520datsun
that was me!!!! my name is steve...cant thank you enough for the help...after you left we drove it until it ran out of gas, installed a fuel filter and put in new fuel line and cleaned the carb, runs like a champ!!! also went to schucks and they had the resistor...it has one wire attatched to it and we have no idea how install it... here my number if you have the answer txt or call thanks steve 206-601-52five6 ps hope you like the ice-pac mod lol Quote Link to comment
520datsun
also i think it installs using the bottom bolt for the coil pac u can see some wear and tear in the picture where it looks like it might go thanks again Quote Link to comment
lil89ram50
haha that is awesome! another datsun on the road! Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Steve Fill up the Resivior for the brake cylinders Look at the alternator or get it cked at NAPA(hope they have a adapter) so see if its working. Volt meter says your not charging. So your running off the battery or your not gettitng a excitation voltage to the battery. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Do these have a ballast resisitor? Factory stock -- yes they do. some aftermarket coils have built-in resistance. So if you replace it with a factory coil, you should use the factory resistor. Wire the resistor to the Coil + terminal. Then fit one of the two wires to the resistor. * Start wire to coil + terminal * Ignition wire to resistor terminal Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
GGZilla * Start wire to coil + terminal cant find a START wire. That red wire you see added to the + side of coil is used for a electric fuel pum.I told them they should finda another 12volt source. Iam just using the IGnition wire(ON) to the ballast then to the +coil. Thats all I see near the coil. Also Not charging. Anyway to trouble shoot this. Its a funly looking alternator with wires goin in to the case. connecteis a couple inches from it. I know nothing about J motor Datsuns. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
cant find a START wire There is one on the starter, the small wire. All early Datsun alternators had wires coming out to a connector (instead of the later T-connector). Even the early 510s. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I thought of that, but figured there was a stock set up like a 510 the 520 wire diagram dont list a Ballast resisitor & a Hot wire set up Ill wait and see if they need more help. Truck needs alot of work but looks intackd new kingpins lights dont work ect Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
replaced with a stock 521 point 1.6 ohm coil The 521 stock setup used a ballast resistor. Coil is UF2 type which requires an external resistor. Most 520 didn't but used a resistor coil (coil which has the resistor built-in). You can safely replace with UF2+resistor. Some 520 came with coil + resistor from the factory. Quote Link to comment
520datsun
truck runs and starts like a champ...needs a lil tune up but im in heaven Quote Link to comment
highdesertdatsun
A bosch blue coil has a internal resister . You can find at any salvage yard!! on a vw or benz. They have good voltage aswell. Most VW bugs upgrade to them. last a long time. Quote Link to comment

520datsun
So just go to shucks and ask for a Bosch blue coil? Sounds sweet... Quote Link to comment
