lakedat
Ok to start I picked up a 74 710 last week. It sat for 6 years, and the fuel gauge is not working. I would like to know if there is a way to test the gauge or is there a common problems with them. Thank you for all help. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Both the temp and the fuel gauge are powered by a small voltage regulator. If the temp gauge works then the regulator is working. Power flows through the gauge to the sender in the tank where there is a variable resistance depending on how full the tank is and then to ground. Grounding the sender wire will give a FULL indication. On the back of the gauge cluster there is a round connector that plugs into it. The #12 wire is Yellow. If you ground this yellow wire with the key, on the gauge should read FULL.if it is working. Probably easier to ground the wire at the tank. Unfortunately both are black so you will have to ground both to get the right one. This will only work if the wire between the tank and the gauge is intact.... and this may be the problem. lakedat
Thank for the help man. Also is there a way on the wagons to get to the sending unit without pulling the tank. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes remove the screws holding the trim and carpet at the back and roll it up forward a couple of feet. There is a round access cover to get at it. Quote Link to comment
