jalen
so i washed my car today and go in to star it and starts right up. but when i rent to rev it it wouldnt go pas 2500 rpm. anybody know why? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Water under distributor cap. Or wires, cap and coil are wet. Remember electricity always tries to find an easier shorter path to ground. Quote Link to comment
jalen
so should i wait for the water to dry than start up? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well if the wires are wet just blot the water up with a paper towels and dry around the spark plugs. Be sure to unclip the cap and check for moisture under there also. Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
More details on the engine specs would be a HUGE help. EFI? Carbs? Electronic dizzy, etc........... If you got water in some kind of connector, it may take a LONG time to just "dry up". So aking things apart and drying them with a blow gun is very helpful. Quote Link to comment
Spades
yeah, pull the distributor cap off and air dry...if there is water in there, you will get ignition problems that will prevent higher RPM's. You have to be VERY careful when you wash most motors to keep water away from ignition and intake areas. P.S. when I used to work at the Ford dealership, we had to replace coils on 5.7's all the time because the detail guys would steamclean the engines then fire them up and blow up the coils. jalen
its a 1976 280z with the efi and electronic distributor. everything else is stock. Quote Link to comment
darrel
TVS is wet. for more info,,, go to zcar and put in the search 2500 rpm. When you washed the engine it got the throttle vane switch wet. Quote Link to comment
jalen
do you mean the tps? Quote Link to comment
Hardwyre
do you mean the tps? Oooh, that's right. The TPS, when it thinks you're off the throttle, cut's the fuel over 3k. You can either try popping the lid off of it (if it's anything like mine, it'll break) and dry, stick it in a bowl covered in dry rice, heat it with a hair dryer, or just try to shake the water out of it. I'm BLUE
de-humidifer rod ---> plug in and stick sensor in small box with it ??? Idk ,,, :) Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
I'd have to agree with the TPS. Quote Link to comment
jesusno2
sounds about what a maf does when they go bad, puts the ecu into a limp mode. Quote Link to comment
Hardwyre
sounds about what a maf does when they go bad, puts the ecu into a limp mode. Unless he's swapped the engine, he has an AFM instead of a MAF. If it's the stop AFM, I don't believe there is a limp mode. Quote Link to comment
jesusno2
so what happens when a AFM goes bad? Quote Link to comment
jalen
so where is the tps? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
TPS is bolted to the throttle body, it is the little black box. Nissan calls it "ACCELERATOR SENSOR". Some call it the throttle angle sensor. Quote Link to comment
Hardwyre
so what happens when a AFM goes bad? They're pretty much just a potentiometer and a switch for the fuel pump. It's rare that they go critically bad, but when they start to go bad, your fuel mapping is all off. If they do go bad entirely, the car simply won't start or run worth a damn because the air/fuel mix will be completely off, if any fuel is being injected at all. so where is the tps? Black box on your throttle body. Here's one of my guides on adjusting it. You might want to do this if you never have. http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/86041-tps-throttle-position-sensor-adjustment-preguide-76-280z/ Before I did it, the computer constantly thought I was running WOT. After adjusting the contacts, I actually noticed that it wasn't quite as quick unless I throttled it a little more, and then I could actually feel the computer switch over to WOT fueling. Hardwyre
Oh, if you do break your housing trying to remove it, a wire tie/zip tie works just fine. Quote Link to comment
Spades
Oh, if you do break your housing trying to remove it, a wire tie/zip tie works just fine. Or epoxy...plastic epoxy will fix that sucker right up...not as cheap as a ziptie though :( If you have a motor manual it should give you spec's for a voltage or ohms test of the TPS so you can know for sure if that is the problem before pulling it, but from what everyone is saying that sounds like it may be the problem. darrel
Don't make it any harder than it already is. TVS-- throttle valve switch. It's in the manual. THE PLUG IS WET, DRY IT OUT! Quote Link to comment
