z24 cam choice

Recommended Posts

Ok so here is the plan. I have a 84 2wd single cab 5-speed pickup. I have a brand new Weber Outlaw 38 conversion kit in my posession. I have a correctly ported cylinder head. I will be ordering a pacesetter header, camshaft and springs this coming week. I have a spare camshaft if I need to send one out to be reground. I will be keeping the stock pistons in place because I will be adding a turbocharger in the next year or less. The info I am looking for is a correct camshaft choice for the setup I currently will be running. I am trying to find a spare intake to port along with the cylinder head. Let me know which camshaft and springs I should go with. Thanks so much in advance!

webcamshafts.com makes cams for the Z series

Your jumping around on what you want to do.

Most turbo grinds are close to the stock camshaft size. so why waist money on a another cam made for a Nat Asperated type motor.Im sure the cam guy will tell you their Cams are better to get bussiness. But really?

Then you want a cheap ass pacesetter header. header will be better if cermamic coated, but really cleans up the heavy cast iron lame exhaust manifold, but only to get rid of it when you Turbo the car(so called less than a year). So most people dont get what you really want.

Otherwise just Turbo the thing first.

I like the 38/38 myself as I run one on my 521 but its not "neck breaking"!!!!!!!!

With the Z series it's the head that's the problem, so a header is a waste of money, even more so if going to a turbo later.

Same with cam. A cam that will wake up a carb motor will be a liability when used with a turbo. Easiest thing to do is run the 38 (I think it's a bit big, but whatever) and a ported head. Turbo later.

Or run the 38, get a cam and header. Next year try to sell rusty used header and run turbo. Motor does not reach potential because high overlap cam allows boost pressure to blow in the intake and right out the open exhaust valve. Gas mileage drops to 6 MPG so you go back to the stock cam and sell the other one.

Pick one direction and plan ahead.

Ok so no Turbo...thanks for that info. So if you guys could point me in the right direction about a cam and springs that would work well with a ported cylinder head and a weber 38 and stock pistons... that would be helpful...I can buy a different cam later for the Turbo setup.

Trying to say the stock cam is probably all you need for a turbo. Here's why: There is a small amount of time when the exhaust valve is closing and the intake is opening called valve overlap. On a stock motor this as fairly small and the exhaust is rushing out and helps pull the intake air in behind it. There really isn't much time for it to think about stopping and going out the intake as well. On a performance cam the overlap time is increased more and more and this benefits extremely high RPM power. The problem with forced induction is that intake air is under pressure and will push into the combustion chamber and.... right out the open exhaust valve. This wastes pressure and fuel for no gain. Because intake air is under pressure you don't need lots of overlap, or even increased valve lift. Turbo cams are close to stock.

Awesome info datzenmike....I just found out the Turbo got sold, so its not gonna be forced induction for even longer lol...question is....what's a good cam for a n/a motor with stock pistons, ported head, Weber 38, and possibly a ceramic header...not a cheap one that will rust in no time....that's if I buy a header at all.

i am running the schneider cam 274f and i think it works well, great for street driving, good idle, good top end... the pacesetter header has a slip on collector rather than a flange, if you dont tun stock hangers the pipe will slip down on the header. try to find something better, i speak from experience

Very interesting. I appreciate you chiming in with experience. In talking with a few old skool ratsunners locally, they say to go with one of two choices...either the webcams 260 or get a custom racer brown grind for my application for the same price. I called racer brown...he said to tell him exactly what I was looking to get out of the truck and he could have a custom grind just for me at my door in a week. If I was gonna run a pacestter....with your info...I believe I would weld my o.e. flange to the bottom of the header...piss on slip joints...the leak like crazy...that is taken from a bit of sbc experience lol. I have yet to order a cam...just looking to gather as much ratsun info as possible. Oh, and I found the webcams on importperformanceparts.com for $50 less than webcams website.

i was considering webcams for a while, but if i remember right there was something about them that was different. i think they have a lot of lift, but not much duration, or something like that... another thing a lot of rats have said is- if your cam is too big, it is possible for the intake and exhaust valves to hit.... dont know if this is true, or how much cam it would take to make that happen, but if you spin your motor by hand you will be able to hear or feel any contact

distributor is always less then from the factory. Thats with everything sold pretty much.

I bought from importperfamance both my webcams. But the last one was the wrong one when I got it. I had to pay shiping back. They sent me a Z series cam when I ordered a L series.

if you was going to Turbo I owuld leave stock. Turbo grinds are NOT long duration.

sounds like you got a good cam in there already. Schneider I have in my 521 truck. personally should have been stock!!!!

I like the schneider also sinner...I was thinkin about going with them as well...I will not be able to go turbo as I thought....the turbo got sold before I could grab it, so that project is gonna have to wait....for now though it will be higher performance N/A. What do you guys think about Racer Brown cams?

If you havent already decided on your cam or parts choice I can help. Ive been running schnieder cams for 20 yrs now and help alot of frinds and family with their cam and ignition choices. The truck on the left is my brother Carlos' truck running a cam with my specs and ignition. Let me know if u need anything. Peace.

Sncheiders what I read are great cams and have one in my 521 also.

However I believe they dont make new cams anymore for the datsun. Maybe write them. What I heard is they will regrind the old one.

But if they sell new ones let us know.
