620doof
I've been searching the forums for how to's and all that, and I have found what I need there. The only thing is that my brother tells me to always do a valve adjustment when the vehicle is warmed up, yet the video I am following gave me a measurement for the valves when they're cold. So, do I do a valve adjustment with the truck warm or cold? And Are these correct: Intake cold - 0.008, Exhaust cold - 0.010. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
Hoosier77
I have always done it cold, the cold measurement is a little more, accounting for the expansion of the metal when its warm. either way you wanna do it. If i were you I would adjust them cold then warm it up and check them to make sure everything is good. Have fun! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Cold adjustment allows for the parts to expand from the heat but what if it's winter and near freezing and the next time it's over 90 in the shade? The absolute best way is to set the lash on a hot motor. If you set the motor on TDC you can adjust half of them. Turn the motor one complete turn and do the other half. You should be able to do them all before the motor cools down or half way thropugh set the valve cover in place and idle for a few minutes. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
The cold measurement is for setting them the first time after a rebuild, since you can't warm it up without having at least an initial adjustment. The warm adjustment is for final adjustment (at least until you readjust after break in). There are 2 sets of numbers, hot and cold. Quote Link to comment
620doof
Thank you my fellows! So .008 and .010 are the cold measurements right? So what are the warm ones? Or are they similar? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
http://www.olddatsuns.com/620tech.htm The 1978 620 factory manual will be close enough as the engine didn't change. Don't guess. This isn't something you want to do the first time without the manual. Quote Link to comment
620doof
hmm, I read the post but he doesn't post anywhere the clearance of the valves when warm.. I can do it cold with the numbers I have from here and the book but I'm kind of unsure about what to set them to warm still. Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
It's on page ET-3 of the 1978 620 Factory Manual. Add +.002 to both cold measurements. Quote Link to comment
