Lude944
So my truck was sitting for a few months and needed gas to turn it on. Got my jug filled with gas and started pouring....on the jug it has this plastic extension hose to reach the hole and well the hose dropped in. Tried to grab it with a hook and it dropped all the way down the pipe into the tank...How much of a problem is this? Quote Link to comment
Rob W.
Only time will tell. Sorry never heard of any one doing this. Good chance nothing will ever happen I don't believe there is anything in there but gas. On a new vehicle with internal fuel pump it could cause trouble but an old Datsun will probably be just fine. What kind of truck is it? Quote Link to comment
DanielC
A problem that sometimes happens with our older trucks is the crud that has collected in the gas tank for the last 40 years sometimes plugs the fuel pickup in the tank, and the engine does not get enough gas to run. The cure is to drop the gas tank, and clean it out. This would be one way to get the gas can neck out of your tank. Quote Link to comment
Lude944
its a 72 521...my only concern was it might block the fuel from being delivered out the tank but i guess a quick left or right would clear that right! Quote Link to comment

If you didn't know it happened, not likely you ever would know, the fuel pickup tube is so close to the bottom of the tank, that it could likely never get in between the tube and tank bottom to plug it. If it was a heavy piece, not plastic, then I would worry about it knocking stuff loose in the tank and causing problems, but that is what filters are for. wayno Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
In tank pumps weren't used in trucks until '86.5. I wouldn't worry about it. Quote Link to comment

pharouh
Mine has a thing that looks like a spring in the gas filler neck. Is this to keep those kind of things from happening? Nothing will fall into the tank. Quote Link to comment
DanielC
In the 1970's after a rapid gas price increase, there was a rash of gas thefts from cars. The spring was sold as an anti siphon device. Pretty sure somewhere on the package was the phrase, "AS SEEN ON TV!' Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
I don't think you'll have a problem with it, but if you want to put your mind at ease, there's an access hatch in the bed of the 521 that you can use to service the fuel sending unit. Just open the small door, and remove the sending unit. You should be able to fish it out from there. Quote Link to comment
