Having some heater issues...

quick background story....

I was driving my truck home yesterday and the heater wasnt blowing hot.... i stopped and i was out of antifreeze completely and I blew up my lower heater hose... so I got a new lower heater hose and me and sick620 put it in today... We tested out the truck and it comes too temp fine and stays at temp, dosnt overheat or anything... the heater blew hot for maybe 5 minutes.... than it dropped off and its just super cold... the trucks warm and the top hoses are hot.... bottom ones areent very hot just kinda warm... I dont understand why theres no heat...

what could it be? what are all the different reasons why it wouldnt heat up?

? what are you talking about?

Ignore him lol..

Pull the lower rad hoes and check it out, see if theres gunk clogged in it. Goes from Rad, to in the motor (bottom hose) then thru the thermostat and back into the radiator. if your upper hose gets hot, sounds like its clogged somewhere else.

Best bet, open the petcock on the bottom of the radiator, shove a hose in the top of the rad. Turn the car on, and the hose on. let it run for 5-10 minutes and flush the radiator and cooling system out. Then fill with proper coolant. That will eliminate it being a clog and be the least amount of $ spent trying to figure it out (gonna have to drain the coolant anyways)

The lower rad hose is on the suction side of the water pump and it can collapse when the hose gets old and soft so sometimes a wire spring is put in them to support the round shape.

The heater valve cable may have come off the valve and it is partly closed OR the cable is out of adjustment. Yes there may be some sediment crud in there too. Remove the hose off the back of the head and the other down by the lower rad hose useing your garden hose flush water through the core. You won't believe the crap that comes our. When it runs clear reverse and flush in the other direction. Keep doing until it runs out clear. I did this on my old 521 and shit like a bunch of dead flies came out. Probably some p/o used bars leak and that shit will plug up the heater.

eric it sounds like your heater core is clogged...

when it lost all its coolant, it prolly rattled shit loose and it clogged up...

ummm... i would say see if you can take a compressor and blow it out.. but your pretty busy at the shop most the time...

my .02...

Water from a garden hose has more oomph to it.

Prestone makes a kit just for this. You install a flushing Tee in the heater inlet hose, remove the radiator cap, snap a plastic "Ell" into the open top of the radiator where you removed the radiator cap, preferrably stick a piece of old hose over the end of the Ell to keep what's left of your paint job safe. Then you hook a garden hose to the Tee and flush away! Byebye antifreeze and all the gunk in the heater, engine block and radiator.

is there anyway it could be my water pump? when we take off the rad cap it looks like its not flowing.....

If it's hot and you let it idle for 10 minutes and it doesn't overheat then the pump is working. On cold days my Sundance will idle forever without the electric fan coming on if I have the heater on.

damn It sucks Ive been busy at the shop and I live in a condo so I get dirty looks when I work on it here. I might just have to make Sick620 flush it out on thursday or would it be worth it to take it to an oil change place and make them flush it ?

and we drove all over and it was running good so I guess it probably isnt the water pump then how much do places charge to flush your coolant? and would they do a good enough job to clear it?

I took it in to a shop to have them flush it and they took a look at it and it just started working its been heating ever since they charged me like 7 bucks for the checks they ran but i had them change the oil so they rolled the cost into that. I dont get it maybe a crazy air bubble or the clog moved but im not complaining

I had one of those on a VW i bought. Worthless. The only thing it did for me was leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I was having the same problem with my wagon. Does the temp gauge read low? I bought a new thermostat yesterday to see if that would fix it, turns out the PO had installed the thermostat upside down! Heater works great now and the car stays at a constant temp. No more cardboard in front of the radiator!
